André Brasilier Art
French, b. 1929
Born to two accomplished artists, Brasilier was naturally drawn to painting, and at the age of 20, he moved to Paris to study at the École des Beaux-Arts. Brasilier has received several prestigious awards, including the 1952 Prix Florence Blumenthal and the 1953 Prix de Rome. He is also one of only two artists (the other being Pablo Picasso) honored with a retrospective at Saint Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum during their lifetime. He has exhibited works alongside legends such as Picasso, Braque, Chagall and Miro, and he is represented in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).(Biography provided by M.S. André Brasilier was the son of the painter Jacques Brasilier. After studying in Saumur and St-Germain-en-Laye, he joined Brianchon's studio in 1949 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was awarded the Prix Florence-Blumenthal in 1952 and the Grand Prix de Rome in 1953. He lived at the Villa de' Medicis from 1954 to 1957. He also received the Prix Charles-Morellet at the Salon de la Jeune Peinture in 1961 and the Prix de Villeneuve-sur-Lot in 1962.
Brasilier's paintings are populated by beautiful, elegant women, respectable nudes and high-class gentlemen and are set in pleasant Val-de-Loire backgrounds, resplendent with landscapes and charming towns. Revealing the distant inspiration of Gauguin and the well-assimilated influence of certain other artists, Brasilier depicts a peaceful, comfortable world, free from care, in a very simple, stylish manner, with delicate harmonies bathed in accommodating sunlight.
Brasilier took part in group exhibitions from 1956, including many in Paris: at the Salon de la Jeune Peinture; regularly at the Salon d'Automne; at the École de Paris exhibition at the Galerie Charpentier (1954-1957); at the Paris Biennale (1961 and 1963); and at the Salon Comparaisons (1961-1964). Mainly, however, he showed his work in solo exhibitions, including: at the Galerie Drouet in Paris (1959); at the Galerie Weil in Paris (1960 and 1964); at the David B. Finlay Gallery in New York (1962, 1971 and 1974); at the Atelier Mourlot in Paris (1964); at the Galerie Guiot in Paris (1967); at the Galerie de Paris (1969, 1972 and 1976); at the Yoshii Gallery in Tokyo (1969, 1974 and 1977); at the Galerie Matignon in Paris (1979); a first retrospective at the Château de Chenonceau in Paris (1980); at the Nichido Gallery in Tokyo (1983); a retrospective at the Musée Picasso in Antibes...

This is a superb painting. On Junghann's finest pieces, such as this one, base colors are used, in the case of the cow, it's a vermillion undercoat, and then myriad colors are applied building up to what your eyes perceive as more uniform and naturalistic colors though it's rather a trompe l'oeil in that it's many different colors and many different layers. You can see the beautiful brush strokes very clearly.

"Le Festin De'Avaignée" Oil on Canvas, Jean de Botton, 1960 (1898-1978)
By Jean Isy de Botton
Located in Palm Desert, CA
This is such a striking piece by Jean De Botton entitled "Le Festin De Avaignée" or The Spider's Feast. This piece is from 1960, after his transition to more abstract work. Button seamlessly weaves together abstract shapes and ideas. The spider is in the midst of its feast yet you see its tireless efforts in the web and shapes behind it. the painting is oil on canvas and has been newly framed in a rich espresso brown wood and gold leaf. We were able to re-use the small brass placard engraved with "JEAN De BOTTON" which was fixed to the original frame. The piece is signed in the lower left. A wonderful and important piece to add to any art collection!
Excerpt from Hanna Fine Arts:
“Jean Isy De Botton was a highly celebrated painter courted by the rich and powerful throughout Europe and America. Born in Salonica, Greece, he studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, whilst also attending the studios of sculptor Antoine Bourdelle and Bernard Naudi.
In 1920 he first exhibited at the Salon des Indépendents, then in 1921 at the Salon d’Automne where in 1927 he was received his first award, and in 1929 at the Salon des Tuileries. During this period de Botton was fully immersed in painting redolent of l’art vivant, but in 1933 he visited Italy where he was profoundly moved by the early Renaissance paintings of Giotto and Piero della Francesca, and on returning to Paris he destroyed most of his previous work. He wrote a manifesto declaring that chiaroscuro which had dominated Western Art since the Renaissance “had killed painting”, and that colour should be the predominant factor in art. He embarked on a new vibrant and expressive body of work which he referred to as “humanist abstraction”, in which figurative elements played a harmonic rather than dominant role in the composition.
During the 1930’s De Botton’s profile rose rapidly. From 1932-1939 he taught at the Académie Montmartre. In 1937 he was the only foreign artist commissioned to paint the coronation of George VI, and was given a solo exhibition in London. Subsequently, Queen Elizabeth II and Winston Churchill would also acquire his work. From 1934-1938 he participated in the Carnegie Institute International exhibitions in America, and was an immediate success. Numerous solo exhibitions followed in New York (1936, 1937, 1942, 1945, 1957), Seattle (1938), San Diego (1938), Philadelphia (1938, 1969), Boston (1939, 1966), Hollywood (1941), Los Angeles (1945), San Francisco (1951), Chicago (1953), Phoenix (1960), Atlanta (1961), Fort Worth (1962), Palm Beach (1962), Dallas (1967). His work was collected by famous figures such as Ernest Hemingway, Charlie Chaplin, the Roosevelt’s and the Kennedy’s. In 1944 he was given a major show at the Museum of California, and commissioned to decorate the San Francisco Opera. He was also made a member of the American Federation of Arts, and became a US national.
In 1956 De Botton returned to Europe, and that year held an exhibition at Galerie Wildenstein in Paris. He held further exhibitions in Geneva (1957); Museum of Osnabruck (1959); Hamm (1960); Cologne (1964); Salzburg (1965); Munich (1965); Vienna (1965); Paris (1966). He was also appointed to the committee of the Salon d’Automne; director of the Salon des Tuileries; member of the Salon des Indépendants; director of the Académie Montmartre (1969); vice-president of the Salon Moderne...
