About the Item
This charming figurine from Meissen Porcelain is of a cat with a captured mouse in his mouth, seated on its haunches, its left forepaw raised to strike the mouse dangling from its mouth, with white coat, brown stripes and spots, and on a ground mound base. Beneath the base is the blue crossed swords trademark of Meissen, incised model #959 after the model by J.J. Kändler.
Meissen porcelain was the first European hard-paste porcelain. The production of porcelain in Meissen, near Dresden, started in 1710 and attracted artists and artisans to its factory, adding to the worldwide renown of their china and porcelain. Its blue crossed sword logo is one of the oldest trademarks in existence. Johann Jakob Kirchner was the first to make large-scale statues and figurines. His assistant was Johann Joachim Kaendler who took over as chief modeller in 1733, becoming the most famous of the Meissen modellers. Under his direction Meissen produced the series of small figurines, such as his menagerie of large-scale animals and the production of exquisite figurines in the rococo style.
Since 1991, the manufacturing of Meissen porcelain has been done with Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen GmbH, whose owner is the Free State of Saxony.

- Walter Midener "Contemplation" Seated Figure Clay Sculpture Mid-Century ModernLocated in Detroit, MISALE ONE WEEK ONLY “Contemplation” is an abstract clay sculpture of a female. The figure has both arms and legs extended, but the dignified pose suggests an intimate rather than a sexual moment. The sculpture is delicately rendered, but monumental in pose and clean composition reminiscent of the English artist Henry Moore. The surface is warm and slightly rough to the touch. This sculpture is in the round and beautifully balanced geometrically with the hands clasped behind the head forming a slightly flattened polygon shape that is echoed in the positioning of the legs and draped fabric of a presumed dress. The figure draws the viewer into her contemplation, peace and confidence. An exceptional piece by Midener. Walter Midener...Category
