Eric Fischl
Arching Woman

2011

About the Item

Since the 1980s, Eric Fischl (b. 1948) has been renowned internationally as one of the most daring and distinct figurative artists. Over the course of his career, Fischl has branched out beyond painting to work in various mediums including sculpture, mosaic, and printmaking. Fischl gained international recognition in the early 1980s for depicting the daily activities of the suburban middle-class imbued with adolescent fantasies, sexual innuendos, and the threat of violence. Fischl has consistently engaged with the human figure, a defining element that recurs throughout his oeuvre. Moving beyond mere representation, the artist delves into the complexities of human consciousness, emotions, and contemporary societal structures through visceral explorations of the body. "Arching Women" is an exceptional example of Fischl's sculpture. This brilliant work captures a nude woman poised on her toes, her head thrown back and elbows raised in the air. Completed in glass, "Arching Women" shares the delicate and ethereal qualities found in Fischl's watercolor painting, both of which demonstrate his profound mastery of light against the human form. Fischl's work is represented in prestigious collections across the globe, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales (Sydney), the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Centre Georges Pompidou, (Paris), among others. By Sorel Etrog
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
Sorel Etrog (1933 - 2014) is arguably Canada's most famous sculptor. His works can be found in numerous museums and private collections including the Tate, the AGO and LACMA. His public sculptures can be found on iconic corners in Toronto, Montreal, Israel and beyond. The Art Gallery of Ontario organized a major retrospective of his work that ran in 2013. This work is the earliest Etrog sculpture Caviar20 has handled to date. It is from Etrog's debut period and may be one of his first works to be casted. This untitled work aka "Venus Figure" merges two signature elements that Etrog employs or combines frequently - the primitive with modernist figuration. The proportions and curves of this work recall the ancient "Venus of Willendorf" sculpture - filtered through Etrog's abstracted bronze lens. Similar sculptures, referred to as "Venus Figurines...
