Signed underneath. This carved stone sculpture by Bernard Takawira (1948 - 1997) is from a private collection. The family owns a quality collection of Shona sculpture. They purchased each piece directly from the artists in the 1980s while visiting Zimbabwe, Africa. This piece, with others, has been in their collection since 1989. Bernard Takawira (1948-1997) is part of the first generation of founding artists in the Shona sculpture community in Zimbabwe. Bernard’s work takes on the style of European modernists as much as it shows local cultural influences. Bernard was one of the early artists who brought international attention to African expressionist aesthetics. Bernard was one of the early artists who helped create a new and artistically serious pathway forward, starting with his earliest works in the 1970’s

He was the son of a miniature painter Edward Jones. He was trained as an engineer under Alexander Nimmo and worked with him on many important works in Ireland, including the building of the bridge at Waterford between 1829 in 1832, of which he was in charge. A taste and an aptitude for sculpture induced him to relinquish his prospects as an engineer and he commenced practice in London as a sculptor.
