Paranthropus Robustus

2017

About the Item

Paranthropus Robustus. An early man (hominid), one of the Australopiths from the subepochs of the early to middle Pleistocene period 2.6 - 1.5 million years ago. Some distinctive features of this species are the larger cranial capacity than the earlier Australopithecus Africanus and is more similar to a modern brain. It had thicker facial buttressing structures and larger postcanine tooth size, in comparison to A. Africanus indicating that Robustus was not a herbivore but an omnivore. With a passion for evolutionary anthropology, Davies created this life-size bronze portrait bust that bravely reaches far back in time, depicting another era bringing the past to the present. Cast in bronze with a glorious finish of silver wax that highlights the facial, upper body features and surface detail. Robustus is captured here deep in thought, looking out onto the African plains contemplating his safety, family, hunger, future and the concept of life itself.

The Nautilus shell is an excellent example of mathematics inherent within lifeforms of the natural world. As Davies consistently uses the 'golden ratio' (1:1.618) to proportion his work, he thought it important to exemplify this in his subject matter. The Fibonacci sequence (where each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers) and the logarithmic spiral are also inherent here. The bronze shell is mounted on a black granite base in a way that creates an optical illusion suggesting it is levitating above the base. This bronze Nautilus...
