Pablo Picasso
Curly Haired Face (Visage aux cheveux bouclés), 1968-1969

1968-69

About the Item

This exquisite ceramic impression captures the face of a man. With textured curls cascading down the side of his face and a thin defined nose with wide gazing eyes, he appears to be taking in his surroundings. In brilliant colors of green, blue, and white that play off the natural red tone of the clay, textures and light come into play that allow for the face to come to life. Created in 1968-1969, this square plaque of red earthenware clay, engobe ground, engraving enchanced with oxides under partial brushed glaze, black patina (white, blue, green) is from the edition of 100. This work features the inscribed stamps: 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' on verso. Catalogue Raisonné & COA: This work is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices accompanying the final sale of the work): Ramié, Alain. Picasso, Catalogue of the Edited Ceramic Works 1947-1971, Vallauris, 1988. Listed and illustrated as catalogue raisonne no. 573.

    By Victor Vasarely
    Located in Palo Alto, CA
Vasarely's skill in creating a sense of the three-dimensional through the use of visual effects is apparent in this work with a combination of recessed and protruding geometrical shapes. Bold black, white, and blue hues accentuate the feeling of volume and space apparent in this marvelous relief. The geometric shapes of circles, squares, and diamonds guide our eye throughout the composition, encouraging us to explore the three dimensional optical effect before us. The total effect of this play on color and shape is visually stunning and impressive in the amount of thought and skill put into the arrangement of design elements. This porcelain Rosenthal relief...
