    Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Mossi Head dress Mas ceremonies Rep Upper Volta" is a wood sculpture that includes various other materials such as fabric, and fibers. An abstracted animal with a hump and a bird on it's back make up the top of the headdress. 27" x 6" x 1" The Mossi states were created about 1500 A.D., when bands of horsemen rode north from what is now northern Ghana into the basin of the Volta River and conquered several less powerful peoples, including Dogon, Lela, Nuna, and Kurumba. These were integrated into a new society call Mossi, with the invaders as chiefs and the conquered as commoners. The Mossi make both political art and spiritual art. Figures are used by the ruling class to validate political power, and masks are used by the conquered peoples to control the forces of nature. The several mask styles reflect the diversity of the population before the 15th century invasion. Long tall masks...

'Calendar Wheel' is an original assemblage by the American artist Charles Berg. Within a divided drawer, Berg has assembled a variety of found objects: metal balls, a clock, a sheet of copper punched with the word 'wind,' a Victorian card of a woman, etc. The artwork takes its name, however, from a transparent 1935 calendar in the lower right. Berg here is following the tradition other artists who specialize in assemblage, including Joseph Cornell, Robert Rauchenberg, and Betye Saar...

Please Note: This Listing is for a commission. This piece will be made specifically for you. (Colors and palette changes can be arranged). Voyager VI is a large Mixed Media Wall Sculpture. It was constructed from 2 layers of MDF board with solid African mahogany, wood stain and acrylic paint. Voyager VI is at once retro and modern. Geometric lines and hard edge paint almost suggest the atomic age, yet the aged mahogany prevents it from being too futuristic (As aluminum or another modern metal would). I wanted to create a piece that looks at once, futuristic and retro. Similar to the industrial and furniture designs of Mid Century Modern movement. Yet while it appears like it could belong in the 1950's space race, the mahogany hardwood and grain texture pulls it back to earth and provides warmth. The name Voyager came from two things. One my son said it looked like a spaceship. Secondly, it is a nod to one of my favorite artists, the abstract artist Harvey Quaytman...
