Mandala Zooxanthellae, Modern Canadian Glass Sculpture, 2019

2019

About the Item

This work of art is inspired by the tiny plant-like organisms called zooxanthellae live in the tissues of many animals including corals, anemones, jellyfish, sponges and foraminifera. These microscopic algae capture sunlight and convert it into energy just like plants to provide essential nutrients to the corals. When under stress, such as high temperature caused by global warming of the oceans and seas, they will die and leave their host, a process known as bleaching. Alex Anagnostou, born in Toronto, has danced around with the visual arts for over 20 years. Sculpting blown and cast glass since 2000, much of her work is inspired by how glass has expanded our ability to see on a microscopic and macroscopic level. Her sculptures explore issues of time, space, nature, energy and interconnectedness. In particular, the filaments series is inspired by brain synapse activity and how these web patterns are emulated in filament structures within cells as well as light patterns within the universe. The sandcast glass Inner Space series explores issues of how we look upon the world, refers to personal dreams of travel and are map-like in appearance. The glass expresses the space that we often forget, between the earth and the ozone layer.
