KAWS
KAWS Original Fake 2006 (KAWS Japan announcement)

2006

About the Item

KAWS Original Fake 2006: A rare, much historic invitation published on the occasion of a KAWS Medicom Toy reception at KAWS' Original Fake Tokyo shop: May 2nd 2006. Offset-printed folding announcement; 6 x 4 inches (folded closed). Good overall vintage condition with some light handling marks or finger prints. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Rare and highly collectible. KAWS Original Fake: A brief history: "In 2005, KAWS still didn’t have gallery representation, but he had built enough of a following to open a store in Tokyo called OriginalFake, which became a personal showroom of sorts. Donnelly was successful enough by this time that there was a robust market of counterfeits for his toys and designs, and the store’s name was a play on that. He had established himself at the center of an adjacent, artlike market for collectibles, one that would eventually converge with the actual art market, though at the time the store was a kind of admission that the mainstream art world was uninterested in him. OriginalFake, which closed in 2013, gave him a central location through which to sell his work — be it toys, clothing, editions — and also a place to experiment with large-scale sculpture." (source: New York Times Feb 9, 2021) About the artist: KAWS roots began as a graffiti artist in the early 1990s, and since then he has built an identity that had its genesis in guerilla imagery added to billboards and bus shelters. He converts familiar visuals into affronting works of art. Through his company OriginalFake he has released limited edition works. He has also collaborated on design projects with Commes Des Garcons, Marc Jacobs, and A Bathing Ape. Most recently he has worked with Kanye West to create the cover art for Kanye's current album. This reworking of popular culture has grown KAWS into a multi-faceted, multi-pronged endeavor that has ventured into the realm of contemporary art. KAWS situates himself at the crossroads of media and art; a vanguard in the new frontier of the 21st century artistic discourse." Related Categories Street Art. Pop Art. Shepard Fairey. Banksy. Located in NEW YORK, NY
Keith Haring Painted Man: Original 1983 announcement card for Keith Haring’s well-documented exhibition, Keith Haring 'Into 84' at Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York, 1983. For this series Haring borrowed Jones' body — from head to toe — as the canvas to his work. A bodily canvas defined by much of the bold pictograms characteristic of Haring's artistic signature. Photos by Haring's long-time friend and collaborator Tseng Kwong Chi. Off-set printed, 1983. Dimensions: 6 x 4 inches. Some minor fading to the reverse; otherwise very good overall condition with strong colors. Literature: Keith Haring: Posters (Prestel pub.) Further About In 1983 Keith Haring teamed up with award-winning choreographer and dancer Bill T. Jones, founder of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. Keith and Bill met in London in 1983 at a time when the graffiti artist was opening a major show at the Robert Fraser Gallery, and together they produced a series of exceptional collaborations in both performance and drawing.
