Nelson Mandela
The Church - Mandela, Former South African President, Signed Art, Robben Island

2002

About the Item

Nelson Mandela, The Church, Signed Limited Edition Lithograph Many people are unaware that Nelson Mandela turned his hand to art in his 80's as a way of leaving a legacy for his family. He spent time with an art tutor and learnt to draw. In 2002, when creating the The Church print, he told Anna and Laura from Belgravia Gallery of his desire to become a full time artist when he retired. The symbolism of the church is important as having a place in which to practice and enjoy religious and spiritual freedom. Although prisoners could never enter the church to practice their faith it remained a powerful spiritual symbol to many, including Nelson Mandela. `The Church’ is another of the few sketches in the Robben Island Series where colour has been used throughout, again indicating the powerful spiritual meaning the church had to Nelson Mandela and his fellow inmates. An edition of 500 lithographs was launched on Robben Island in 2003 and very few remain available.
