About the Item

JOHNSON’S HOUSEHOLD BOOK OF NATURE Craig Hugh, Editor Henry J. Johnson, Publisher New York, 1880 64 Chromolithographs 7” x 10” Unframed “…full & interesting descriptions of the Animal Kingdom based on the writings of the Eminent Naturalists Audubon, Wallace, Brehm, Wood, and others.” With this descriptive paragraph, Henry J. Johnson set out to publicize this encyclopedic work on animals. Modest in size and complete in one volume, this book on natural history was aimed at the popular audience of its day. The world had opened its doors to exploration and specimens from every continent filled the halls of castles and museums. Kangaroos, wallabies, tigers and giraffes were all known to the average school-aged child. Parents were learning the value of bookshelves filled with the latest literature on the wonders of the world. Hugh Craig, editor, combined brief commentary from well-known naturalists with brightly colored chromolithographs often based on that specific naturalist’s illustrations. Most easily recognizable are the Audubon animals from The Quadrupeds of North America. Thus, even those not privy to more expensive subscriptions could enjoy the accomplishment of America’s greatest illustrator of birds and animals. The result is a delightful collection of animals from around the world set in the distinctive backgrounds of their natural environment.
