About the Item
Trying my best to decipher the name I get Leo Tanenbaum. Well, (Sergeant) Sgt. Leo Tanenbaum. Sorry that I haven't been able to find a mid-century artist with this name. It's such an accomplished image there have to be other works as well.
Aubervilliers is an industrial town to the east of Paris and this screams wartime Europe. There's a woman pulling an impossibly heavy cart through a grim neighborhood. Clearly the artist was an American soldier witnessing the struggles of the local French population to survive. From a back window a second woman watches. Life is lonely and hard.
The technique is tricky. At first glance it is an etching but on closer view I suspect it it mostly, perhaps entirely, drypoint for which an acid bath would not have been needed. Further, the rain-like streaks and the dark plate tone add to the gray atmosphere. The result is a very expressionistic image.
It is titled and signed Sgt. Leo Tanenbaum (sp?) in pencil.
