Le clown et l’Harlequin (Clown & the Harlequin)

1971

About the Item

In the wonderful Picasso Le clown et l'Harlequin (The Clown and the Harlequin), 1971, a clown and harlequin walk side by side as if in deep conversation. The vibrant red, blue and yellow colors which decorate their costumes belie the placid expressions on their faces. The clown is seen wearing a striped shirt with a dramatic hat, his oversized hands and feet emphasizing his comedic persona. The harlequin wears the trademark red and yellow diamond patterned suit, yet his face is darkly colored in contrast against his festive costume. The two characters appear to be caught in a serious moment, the harlequin looking quizzically at the clown as if waiting for a response. This subtle detail exemplifies the human side to these usually theatrical and buffoon-like characters. It is precisely this willingness to detract from classical caricature which qualifies Picasso as a creative visionary. Created in 1971, this color lithograph on Arches wove paper is hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 100 in pencil in the lower left margin. This work was printed by Henri Deschamps and published by Mourlot, Paris. • L'efant aux biscuit (Child with Cookie)
    By Pierre-Auguste Renoir
    Located in Palo Alto, CA
An intimate portrait of his second son, Jean Renoir (1894 – 1979), evokes a childlike sentiment and love that Renoir had for his children. Most likely no more than age 3, Jean is shown here with a cookie, beneath a frilly bonnet characteristic of late 19th century French society. His pink, rosy cheeks are defined with rich, glowing hues that contrast from the pale yellow and grey background in which he rests. Jean was also featured in a family portrait of the Renoirs, titled La Famille de l’Artiste (1896). Created in 1899, this Color Lithograph on Cream Laid Paper is from the edition of 100, from the unpublishedL’Album d’estampes originales de la Galerie Vollard; printed by Auguste Clot, Paris. Catalogue Raisonné: It is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the final sale of the work): 1. utting a new spin on one of his favorite subjects, Léger here depicts tree trunks and logs as objects in space rather than related to the ground. The gnarled branches form an abstract still-life composition, twisting and turning in unanticipated directions. The earthy browns, greens, and yellows contrast with the bold black outlines. The logs appear as though arranged on a platter, presented to the viewer for contemplation. An intriguing aspect of this piece is the tiny box...
