Typical of Herman's work that is figurative in essence though treated with a modernist, expressionist feel.
This is a Limited Edition numbered 52 from the edition of 150 and is signed by the artist. Printed in 1997 by the Curwen Press.
Josef Herman OBE, RA
Herman was a highly regarded Polish-British painter who influenced contemporary art, particularly in the United Kingdom. He was part of a generation of central and eastern European Jewish refugee artists who emigrated to escape Nazi persecution.
Born in Poland in 1911 he escaped the Jewish Ghetto where all his family died and fled to France initially and then the UK.
Josef Herman, not exactly a Welsh artist, but the Welsh have claimed him as one of theirs due to him living for 11 years in Ystradgynlais and having an affinity with the mining community. He is one of the giants of the 20th Century and indeed was both a Royal Academician and was awarded an OBE for services to art.
