Dudley Hardy
Dudley Hardy 1915 original poster for "Hall's Coca Wine - The Elixir of Life"

1915

About the Item

Dudley Hardy Hall's 1915 poster for "Coca Wine - The Elixir of Life" provides a captivating glimpse into a bygone era of advertising. This unique beverage combined wine with cocaine, with one prominent brand being Vin Mariani, created by Angelo Mariani in 1863. The poster features an elegant woman holding a glass of "Coca Wine," embodying the Art Nouveau style of the time. However, it's essential to note that as concerns over drug abuse grew, coca-based drinks like Vin Mariani waned in popularity. In 1914, the United States enacted the Harrison Narcotics Tax Act, prohibiting cocaine, and later, in 1920, coca wine became illegal with the nationwide alcohol prohibition. Dudley Hardy Hall's poster serves as a historical snapshot, reflecting changing attitudes toward substances like cocaine in the early 20th century, as well as the rise and fall of coca wine's popularity. • Circa 1900 Original poster for the Tillier dance Troup at the Palais de Glace
    Located in PARIS, FR
The girl who has entered the theatrical profession as a child can be depended upon to lead a clean life when she grows up. She is far, far safer than the girl who enters the profession after childhood.' So wrote John Tiller, whose theatrical school produced the dancing ladies who starred in the original 'Pony Ballet' and whose troupes of 'Tiller Girls' were in great demand for shows not only in London but in Paris, Amsterdam, Turin, and New York. He and Mrs. Tiller began training youngsters at the age of nine. In the schools in London and Manchester, the girls had regular academic studies as well as dancing and were placed in Christmas pantomimes when still children. When they grew up, they were given jobs in various Tiller troupes (each managed by a mature woman who watched out for them)... [This lithograph]... was intended for all of the Tiller Troupe performances. The black type at the bottom was surprinted later to indicate, in this instance, their appearance at the Palais de Glace...
