“Professor Low is the author of…a most extensive and magnificent work on the breeds of the domestic animals of the British Isles, which no agricultural society should be without. It is too expensive for private purchasers in general.”
The New Zealand Journal, Vol. III; Fleet Street, London, 1842.
As a professor of agriculture at Edinburg University, Low created this comprehensive work on animals familiar to the English countryside. The science of selective breeding lent itself to acquiring knowledge of the principles and practice of breeding, the properties of external form, as well as the natural and economic history of the species. To this end, Low published a pioneering reference work. Useful for breeders and general farmers alike, it highlighted the specifics of environment to the improved productivity of species breeding.
The Breeds of the Domestic Animals of the British Isles sets magnificent examples of prize winning horses, cattle, pigs and sheep in their natural stance against beautiful landscape backgrounds. Transposed as illustrations by William Nicholson, RSA, the original paintings are by William Shiels, RSA, who was commissioned to create a series of paintings of existing British domestic farm animals of significant economic interest. Faithfully accurate as opposed to idealized, many animals are show with their young, some in the act of nursing. Of note is the distressing fact that several species are now extinct. Low’s text was the perfect compliment to complete this landmark work.
