About the Item
Untitled (Roper at Bell Ranch) by Bank Langmore is a 8 x 12 inch toned silver gelatin print. This piece is framed, the frame size is 21 1/2 x 28 in. This photograph is signed in pencil on mount margin.
Untitled (Roper at Bell Ranch) depicts a cowboy riding on a horse. The cowboy is turned away from the viewer, looking back over his shoulder at the rope leading to a small calf in the distance. The dust-filled air clouds the background, showing the fast paced environment of a cowboy trying to wrangle an animal.
Bank Langmore, born in 1935, left a corporate job in Dallas in the 1970s to become a photographer. His first major assignment was to photograph the American cowboy. He traveled throughout the West, spending time on working ranches still practicing traditional ranching methods. The 35mm cameras he used gave him the freedom to move, get close to the action, and respond quickly to light and mood. He had an eye for people, not the glamorous kind, but the working kind. His photographs convey the cowboys’ toughness from years of laboring under the sun, but there’s humor and love as well. Bank’s vintage prints from the 1970s are classics of western photography. His images were published in the acclaimed book, “The Cowboy.”
