Bathers enjoy the sun by the pool at the Hôtel du Cap Eden-Roc, Antibes, France, 1976. Aarons' iconic photograph depicts the legendary hotel made famous by Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night, the sun-kissed home away from home for titans of literature and music (Cole Porter, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Stefan Zweig, Noël Coward), film (Marlene Dietrich, Alain Delon, Elizabeth Taylor, who brought all of her husbands there, and every Hollywood A-lister in town for Cannes), art (Chagall, Picasso, Matisse), music (John and Yoko, Jane and Serge, Ella Fitzgerald), politics (Churchill, De Gaulle, the Kennedys), and high society (the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson). This famous image of vintage glamour captures the contrast between the jewel blue of the ocean and the turquoise of the pool, set off by monumental rocks in the foreground and mountains in the distance: the fluid undulation between the natural and the architectural. In doing so, he captured a golden age of wealth, privilege, beauty and leisure that occurred alongside—but quite separate from—the cultural and political backdrop of the second half of the Twentieth Century. Andy Warhol began using the big-shot Polaroid camera in 1971 and continued using it religiously until he died in 1987. Despite the camera being discontinued in 1973, he continued to use it to capture the actors, artists, dancers, politicians, socialites, and factory members of his world. Frequently, Warhol's polaroids were used as preparatory works for his iconic silkscreen portraits or other artworks. They also revealed his immediate personal vision functioning as a chronicle of his surroundings and social life. In 1977, Warhol began work on two new sexually-charged bodies of work, Torsos and Sex Parts. These two series are regarded as Warhol's most daring, arguably the earliest overtly gay work in his oeuvre. Ultimately, the works in these series served to help Warhol assert his own homosexuality. Sex Parts is a series of photos featuring explicit male and female body parts, blurring the line between art and pornography. Makes for fantastic wall-art. Daido Moriyama (Japanese, b.1938) is a prolific Japanese artist, well-known as a photographer, graphic designer, and writer. Moriyama was born in Ikeda City, Osaka, Japan. He studied photography at the Takeji Iwamiya studio in Osaka before moving to Tokyo in 1961 to meet the members of VIVO. Moriyama became an assistant to Eikoh Hosoe, and gained access to the Tokyo photo world through this position. In 1968, Moriyama produced a collection of photographs, Nippon gekijo shashincho, in high-contrast, in which he focused on the indigenous world or the few indigenous things that had not been corrupted by the rapidly industrializing world. Around the same time he produced this collection, he began to draw the attention of many young and aggressive artists, most of them photographers, by becoming involved in the group magazine Provoke. Other artists who also participated in this group magazine project include Koji Tagi, Yutaka Takanashi, Takuma Nakahira, and Takahiko Okada.
