George McLeod
Florist, Mandala - collage of dead flowers

2020

About the Item

‘Florist’ originally called ‘dead flowers’, was created using the flowers from my girlfriends ‘Zoom’ backgrounds over the space of several months. Usually scanned the moment she considered them to be wilted. About the series: " 'Detritus' series was born from the twin frustrations of lockdown halting all planned projects, yet litter still somehow being dropped in abundance on my street. With no idea of the final output, or indeed the hygiene implications, I started to collect, scan, and record what I found. When I realised these colourful misshapen objects could be turned into something beautiful, the frustrations left me and I began looking for other sources of Detritus. Florist, 2020 Series: Detritus Archival Pigment Print, Mounted on Dibond in custom made Frame; with Black Stained Oak and antireflective UV protective museum standard Art Glass Print 60 x 60 cm / Framed: 62 x 62 cm/ 24.5 x 24.5 inches approx. Edition of 8 + 2AP About the Artist George McLeod is a London-based fine art and fashion photographer. After building a darkroom in his dad’s attic when he was 16, he went on to study photography at Nottingham Trent University, from which he graduated in 2003. For a while after, he strayed from his original focus as he pursued a career in writing music for TV and film – though he continued to shoot fashion editorials in his spare time for brands such as Louis Vuitton, Prada, Fendi and Bvlgari, among others. In 2019, after finding inspiration for a fine art photography project, he decided to further dedicate himself to the medium. He is currently developing a practice in which he can combine his love for photography with his passion for short story writing and music. His love for painting has a major influence on his work, as does his lifelong fascination with science. McLeod has been the recipient of numerous photographic awards and his work has been acquired by various private estates and art collection. • Prints come framed and ready to hang. Frame - Custom made by professional framers in London: Lager Print mounted on Aluminium Dibond, in a hardwood frame, and finished with antireflective AR70% Art Glass Shipping by professional art shippers with bespoke wood crating for artwork protection and curb side delivery. These collages gave me purpose during the pandemic and allowed me to grow something beautiful from a place of frustration. My aim is to simply give viewers of the work a fleeting moment of calm. Unable to shoot anything, I’ve been making collections of things I find on the ground and scanning them to create composite images of otherwise ignored or discarded objects." - George McLeod

Truth, 2017 Print on Museum Glass, Hand gilded with Lemon and Moon Gold 31 x 31 cm/ 12.2 x 12.2 in (custom framed) Edition of 5 This print is from a series of images made from a collection of honesty seeds gathered at the end of baking hot summer... The papery enclosures are like parchment through which the light filters with a pale gold delicacy." The beauty of the pieces printed on glass are truly revealed when seen in the flesh, which shimmer in the daylight and change constantly as different light sources are reflected off the print. "My fascination with colour goes back a long way. One of my earliest creative recollections has me sitting at a table endlessly mixing paints in a valiant but ultimately futile attempt to 'invent a new colour'. It was an imperative that kept me occupied for some time as I recall. The result was always the same - and unedifying fudge of pale peach and silver." - Valda Bailey...

However, it is that simplicity that allows Jackson to adapt his own way of thinking into the making of the finished piece. As he says, it's as close as he can get in photography to painting. "I don't really see photography and pottery or painting or music to really be different to each other. Some are more immediate, some are more subtle. Music seems to be able to control emotions, photography seems to create a satisfying pleasure from just a tonal flat surface. Same with painting. One of the biggest mysteries for me is why all these things manage to control us in some way." - Michael G Jackson...
