Provenance: Freed Estate Leonard Freed discovered Little Italy in New York City early in his career and equally became charmed by Italians in their own country. The photographer made numerous trips to Italy, especially to Rome and Naples, capturing the people. everyday life, love, sadness, joy of family gatherings, food and leisure. Freed's photographs of Italy ultimately reflect the “Italian spirit,” the art of enjoying the moment, the culture and lifestyle of a Latin country. *** Artist's Bio: Freed's photographic career often led him to tackle weighty documentary subjects, such as work he shot for his famous "Black in White America" series, for which he became known as one of the one of the strongest documentarians, a social documentary photographer. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Leonard Freed worked as a freelance photographer from 1961 onwards. As a Magnum photographer Freed traveled widely, photographing African Americans in America (1964-65), events in Israel (1967-68, 1973), and the New York City police department (1972-79). Freed's coverage of the American civil rights movement made him well-known as did his photo essays on New York, Italy, Germany, among others. Leonard Freed died in 2006. *** Available at 99Prints NYC an online art marketplace for today’s collector of contemporary art, works on paper, original and limited edition photography. Located in London, GB
A camera is a window through which a photographer interacts with the world, and it's up to the operator to decide whether his camera will be a barrier or a mirror between he and his subjects. In the 1970s, Michael Abramson chose the latter path when he brought his camera to Pepper's Hideout on Chicago's South Side. Following in the footsteps of his acknowledged influence Gyula Halász, a Hungarian photographer better known as Brassaï who became the pre-eminent chronicler of the Paris nightlife he loved so much, Abramson initiated himself into the nightlife of Chicago's predominantly black neighbourhoods. He was very much a part of the scene he documented on film, drinking, laughing, and dancing with his subjects into small hours and becoming as much a part of the atmosphere as the locals who frequented the same nightspots he did. - Joe Tangari (Numero Group, 2009) This series won Abramson a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1978 and launched his career as a photojournalist. Eventually the project resulted in a hardbound book, Light: On the South Side, including the Grammy and Mojo nominated album, featuring Chicago blues...
