Sandra Cohen
“wake”, contemporary, abstract, sea, water, blue, green, red, acrylic painting

2023

About the Item

Sandra Cohen’s “wake” is a 36 x 24 x .25 inch acrylic painting on tempered hardboard, loosely painted in colors of blue, green, red and white. At the top of this seascape is a hazy horizon, with tiny cross marks overlaid in white, fading in and out. Closer to the viewer on the left, something is moving just out of frame, leaving churning dark and red water in its wake. This painting is unframed with the signature on the back. Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids. Cohen is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
