The artist has adoped start contrasts of light and shade, deep colours and an overall dynamism to achieve a sense of grandeur and awe for his rendering of the Old Testament scene in which Moses, instructed by God, strikes the ground to draw water from the rock, for the Israelites (Exodus, 17).
