Willy SmitzWar and Peace, Mid-Century Surrealist Oil on Board.1954
1954
About the Item
Mid-century Surrealist oil on board depicting War and Peace by Belgian Artist, Willy Smitz. Signed and dated bottom right with his recognisable triangular motif ( initialed WS ), in a period frame.
Born in Belgium in 1914 Willy Smitz began his artistic career as an impressionist painter turning to surrealism in the 1950s.
He died in 1967.
This painting very graphically and colourfully depicts the two opposing sides of war and peace. Painted in 1954 and presumably strongly influenced by the ravages of the second world war and the threat of nuclear devastation during the cold war period. The left side of the image offers a vision of hope post apocalypse with its brighter colours and doves of peace whilst the right highlights the grim consequences of war offering bombs and a figure of death on a backdrop of a fire-red sky.
A thought provoking statement piece.

- Large Surrealist Oil on Canvas. 'She brought Colour into his Life'.By Frank DochertyLocated in Cotignac, FRLarge surrealist contemporary oil on canvas by Scottish artist Frank McLean Docherty R.S.W, signed and dated bottom left and signed and titled 'She brought Colour into his Life' to the reverse. This piece whilst wonderfully colourful, playful and erotic is typical of the witty sense of humour this artist displays in all his work. Docherty likes to tease us visually and asks questions and presents conundrums to the viewer. Frank McLean Docherty was born in Glasgow , Scotland in 1942. He became a student at Glasgow School of Art in 1960 and graduated from the Department of Printed Textiles in 1964. He taught in a secondary school in the East End of Glasgow for two years, thereafter departing to work in Dublin in the Republic of Ireland as a textile designer (Marks & Spencer, Heals and Liberty of London). He was also an illustrator for a range of newspapers and an Art Director of magazines. In 1973, he was appointed Principal Teacher of Art in a Scottish High School and in 1978 was honoured by the Queen when he was appointed Member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours (R.S.W.) He left education in 1994. Since that time he has developed a vision which is quite unique in Scottish Art. Bank Managers, toucans, lighthouses, penguins, bowler hats, Frank Docherty...Category

- Italian Modernist Surrealist Architecture Landscape Oil Painting Lazzaro DonatiBy Lazzaro DonatiLocated in Surfside, FLLazzaro Donati (Italian, 1926-1977) Oil on board. Colorful Architectural Italian Landscape. Porto Azzurro, 1964 Hand signed upper right. signed, titled on back of panel. Dimensions: (Frame) H 37" x W 29", (Panel) H 27" x W 19" Lazzaro Donati was born in Florence and attended the Academy of Fine Arts. He began to paint in 1953, and in 1955 held his first exhibition at the Indiano Gallery in Florence. Within three years eleven exhibitions followed in Italy, and as his reputation grew he was invited to give major exhibitions in London, Paris, New York, Chicago, Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo. He is considered one of the foremost contemporary Italian painters and his paintings hang in museums and private collections throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia. His work is recalling the works of the french Raoul Dufy, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Francois Gall and Jean Jansem. This particular work is reminiscent of the work of Manolo Valdes. Donati lived and worked at 24 Piazza Donatello in Florence, the square where generations of artists have created works worthy of the great Florentine tradition. As you entered the narrow hallway to his studio, a gilded life-size Venetian angel beckoned you to his door. Once inside, the present faded away and you found yourself in an atelier where early masters might have worked during the Renaissance. Within, luxurious Persian rugs set off the innumerable objects d’art and antique furnishings...Category
