Mid 20th Century French Expressionist oil on canvas of a lake in its frozen landscape by Jacques Pinon. The painting is signed bottom right and is titled on the stretcher and signed to the back of the canvas. Pinon was noted as an artist in various mediums as well as painting, including tapestry and stained glass. His appreciation of colours and forms are very evident in this painting where he has captured a winter landscape but with subtle colours and forms giving movement and a jewel like feeling to the composition. The cold frosty light of the day animating a rural landscape, his use of layers of colour against raw canvas giving the feeling of the glassy lake. Jacques Pinon was a 'Renaissance Man', accomplished in many aspects of art and literature. he painted, worked in stained glass as well as sculpture and tapestry - he studied and worked at the National School of Decorative Art of Aubusson. He was also a poet and published writer. “All the forms of expression of the artist Jacques Pinon are brought together. A journey of fabulous encounters for this artist, his work is impressive, not to mention his work in collaboration with very great artists." Pinon exhibited extensively and internationally including a major exhibition in PARIS in 1954. “JAZZ.HOT” alongside Dali – Courtaud – (les) Delaunays – Dubuffet – Duffy – Leger and Mondrian. He also an exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art – Sacred Art Salon in 1960 in PARIS, at the Salomon Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Foundation Royaumont. His tapestries were exhibited in France in 1969 in the city of Lyon at the Galerie Verrières with GilioliI and Lurcat. His painting and sculpture are at the crossroads of several universes. Lively and luminous like a Corrida afternoon, the light reminds us of the work the artist did for the stained glass windows, he plays with both using different techniques and styles and his thirst for discovering new forms of expression. He came from a noted family of artist and artisans. His great-uncle was Alfred de Musset; his great-grandfather and his grandfather both Courtots from the Gobelins factory in Paris, and his family were all friends of Rodin. A French Expressionist oil on canvas landscape of countryside at L'Olivette, Cap d'Antibes on the French Riviera, by Germain Bonel. The painting is signed bottom right and signed, dated and titled to the back of the canvas. A strong and impactful composition of the trees and forest leading down to the sea wall and then the Mediterranean beyond at the Port (or 'Abri' as it is also known) of l'Olivette on the west coast of Cap d'Antibes, the iconic location in the South of France. This former small traditional fishing port from the beginning of the twentieth century is now converted into a picturesque little marina on Cap d'Antibes, with its rocky cove, its beach, its pine forest, its umbrella pines, olive trees, fig trees, and agaves and its famous 'Villa Aujourd'hui' a modernist residence built by American architect Barry Dierks (1899-1960) in 1938 for socialite Mrs. Audrey Chadwick. L'Olivette has a privileged panoramic view of the Gulf of Juan, and the coastal shores of Cap d'Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, Golfe-Juan, and the Pointe Croisette of Cannes. Germain Bonel (5 August 1913 – 2002) was a French painter of Catalan origin. From 1967 to 1983, he was a professor of drawing and painting at the Perpignan School of Fine Arts. From 1969 to 1978, he also taught art in the schools of Saint-Cyprien-village and Saint-Cyprien-Plage. Germain Bonel's painting is both expressionist and decorative. Georges-Henry Gourrier said of him: "Germain Bonel's painting expresses [quite naturally] the singular beauty of forms, the radiant force of colour, the deepening of matter and the tenderness of the things of life. His work appears to be a painting of plenitude." From 1941 to 1945, Germain Bonel studied drawing at the Municipal School of Fine Arts in Perpignan. He won first prize in 1945. Out of competition, he continued his studies at the same school from 1945 to 1948 and he regularly exhibited his works at the annual exhibition held at the Salle Arago in Perpignan. Germain Bonel met François Desnoyer in 1950 and introduced him to the Catalan artistic milieu. "Fence Jumper" is an oil painting with chalk and graphite on wood panel, and measures 16" high by 12" wide. It is finished with a clear resin across the surface, lending the artwork a particular warmth and liquidity that is rare and lovely to behold. Typical of the artist, the painting is a mystery despite its apparent simplicity – a boy, a young lad leaps over the fence, seen here mid-flight. It's clearly important to the boy. His focus and sense of achievement ring out. Drawn lines and painterly brushstrokes render the scene, but also note the toned wood coming through as color and texture. It is finished with a clear resin across the surface, lending the artwork a particular warmth and liquidity that is rare and lovely to behold. Typical of the artist, the painting is a mystery despite its apparent simplicity – the landscape with trees on the horizon, the wide full sky bearing down with clouds and light. The picture surface is very interesting – drawn lines and painterly brushstrokes to be sure, but note the speed and swift conviction of those brushstrokes.
