Severo Amador (1886 - 1931) Yarda de la Corte Mexico Oil Painting on Panel 1920

1920

About the Item

Severo Amador (Mexican, 1886 - 1931) Yarda de la Corte - A Mexican Courtyard at Noon • Oil on panel, ca. 19 x 39 cm • Frame, ca. 26 x 46 cm • Signed lower right & dated 1920 An exceptional painting by this interesting Mexican painter Severo Amador – Read on … Severo Amador was born in 1879 at Villa de Cos, Zacatecas, Mexico. He studied painting in San Carlos with José Ma. Velasco, Santiago Rebull and German Gedovius. He obtained a scholarship to continue his studies in Paris but a disappointment in love prevented him from traveling and later he founded the Academy of Plastic Arts in Aguascalientes. Besides working as a successful artist mainly favoring watercolour and very rarely painted in oils, Severo also gave painting lessons privately as well as at his Academy of Plastic Arts - notably to the famous Saturnino Herrán – and wrote and taught poetry to the daughters and sons of Mexico ‘s upper class. Severo Amador published: Narrative: Confession (1905), Provincial Tickets (1907), Let's go to the dance of Mexicapan, Carbunclos (1908), Cantos de la Sierra (1918), Las Baladas del Terruño, (posthumous edition 1931), etc. . In spite of his social ties to the ruling class, Severo managed to survive the Mexican Revolution which ended in 1920 - incidentally the exact year this painting was finished and signed with his famous ‘Zorro’ Signature. I would like to draw attention to the washing line ... Is that a no longer needed uniform, drying on the right end, ushering a new time of peace? Symbolism aside, this picture is an ode to light, with a bright blue sky, glowing terracotta flagstones and short shadows. Generously painted, with thick, luscious impasto paint layers. Most probably the best Amador oil painting on the market and maybe his last masterpiece, before his mental health declined rapidly. Unfortunately Severo suffered from schizophrenia and experienced multiple personalities. By his end around 1928 he was Yorik Valencia, or the Count of Taka Makala and others. Over time he was admitted on three different occasions to the General Asylum de La Castañeda. (Mental institute) in Mexico City, where during his stays he would present different projects to the management, taught painting and gave guitar lessons to his fellow patients and employees. Severo Amador died young of an ulcer in La Casta, Mexico City on February 18, 1931. Today Severo Amadors painting is very respected, especially for his talented handling of light, but also for his chosen subject matters dealing with simple Mexican daily life. His works are listed in America and Europe as important examples of Mexican / Latin American painting are held in various museums and collections und turn up from time to time at auction.
