About the Item

"Noah's Ark", Monkeys in Trees w. Crocodiles, Richard DeTreville 1924 San Mateo A lively, large-scale vertical painting of Macaques monkeys in the trees above a lake teeming with crocodiles by Richard De Treville (American, 1864-1929). This life size painting was painted in 1924 for "Noah's Ark", a depression era restaurant in San Mateo, California. This painting hung in the opening of the restaurant from 1925-1931. Richard De Treville was commissioned to paint numerous animal paintings to fit the Ark theme. Lions, Tigers, Hippo's, Elephants and a 9 foot painting of a Giraffe were some of the themes. The painting depicts the band of Monkeys sneering and screeching at the Crocodiles lurking below them. Cleaned and varnished for a lifetime of enjoyment. Signed "De Treville" in the lower left corner. Presented in a wood frame. Image size: 96"H x 47.45"W Frame size: 102.5"H x 55.5"W. An exhibit entitled “Noah’s Ark: San Mateo’s Historic Restaurant” (see images) opened Jan. 23 2018, at the San Mateo County History museum at Courthouse Square on Broadway in Redwood City. The exhibit that ends April 15 includes items from the restaurant operated by black entrepreneur Noah Williams, perhaps the most popular restaurateur on the Peninsula during the 1920s. In addition to its menu of Southern cuisine, Noah’s Ark was renowned for its décor that stressed the biblical Noah’s Ark throughout. Huge paintings of animals were hung on the walls, and some of those paintings will be featured in the exhibit which also has a variety of photos from the restaurant that opened in 1925 and closed in 1931, a victim of the Depression. Richard De Treville was born in Beaufort, South Carolina on November 17, 1864. In 1892, he moved to California and settled in Stockton where he established a small newspaper called Det's Magazine. Shortly after 1910, De Treville moved to San Francisco where, in addition to painting, he worked as a cartoonist for the Park Presidio News. His works were handled locally by Schussler Brothers and Sanborn & Vail, and were also available in his Clement Street studio. The last few years of his life were spent across the bay in Alameda where he died on February 25, 1929. Little is known about his art training; he was possibly self-taught. De Treville worked in oil and, on rare occasions, in watercolor. He was known to be an excellent portraitist although his portraits are rare. The most prolific of early California painters, his small landscapes are invariably of the San Francisco Bay area, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, and northern California. Member: American Art Bureau. Exhibited: White House Department Store (San Francisco), 1926 (250 oils). Works held: California Historical Society; Oakland Museum; Alameda Historical Society.

  • Large Scale Early 20th Century Bucolic Mt. Hood Landscape
    By William M. Lemos

Gorgeous landscape with two cows drinking water in a pond with Mt. Hood in background by listed artist William M. Lemos (American, 1861-1942). Signed "W.M. Lemos" lower right. Presented in vintage gilt-toned frame that shows wear (included as-is). Condition: Good: previously owned and used, with little or no signs of wear and is in good condition. No structural issues. Image size: 29"H x 49"W. Born in New York, Professor Lemos moved to San Francisco in 1887 where he established a studio at 106 Geary Street. He later moved to Santa Cruz in 1896, where he settled, painting murals for many local businessmen and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. As a boy Lemos earned money by wandering the streets and painting on request. Arriving in San Francisco in 1887, he established a studio at 106 Geary. With his wife Mabel, he worked in Los Angeles for a few years in the 1890s. After settling in Santa Cruz in 1896, he painted murals for many local businessmen. When the original Beach Casino was built there at the Boardwalk in 1904, Lemos was the first concessionaire and worked there for nearly 40 years. On his platform in the Casino, Lemos did paintings of redwoods, still lifes, forest fires, beach scenes, and marines. Many of his oils were done on redwood slabs which were popular with the tourists; in the early days these paintings sold for one dollar and up depending on the size of the work. After his vision failed and he was unable to paint, his last years were mostly spent fishing off the Municipal Pier with a friend who baited his hook for him because he could no longer see. In the March 27, 1941 Santa Cruz Sentinel News Lemos reminisced, "Them were the days when the Boardwalk was only twelve feet long and when business got slow I picked up my shotgun and went across the street and shot ducks where the Casa del Rey Hotel now stands." Exhibited: Calif. State Fair, 1885; Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1889. In: Santa Cruz City Museum; Wawona Hotel (Yosemite). Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940" His mother was Julia Lemos, a Chicago artist famous for her depiction of the Chicago fire, “Two of Julia’s children became successful artists. Her eldest son, William, was a naïve still life, landscape, and mural painter. As a young boy in New York, he would wander the streets, earning money for the family, by ‘painting on request.’ At age 26, William moved to San Francisco, California. He opened an art studio and kept it running until he moved to Santa Cruz with his wife, Mabel, in 1896. During this period, he worked as a fresco artist painting ‘murals for many local businessmen.’ Exhibited California State Fair, Sacramento, 32nd annual, per Sacramento Daily Union, September 9, 1885. and article goes on to say “William Lemos and wife, Sacramento – Art school exhibits in which are shown such a variety of designs in decorative art, flower painting, and ornamentation, that one must give time to the examination.” Exhibited Mechanics Institute, San Francisco, 1889. “Lemos and his wife were in Fresno California 1890...

I paint because it’s the best way I know to communicate, study, and observe creative work that’s how Texas painter V…. Vaughan (the first initial stands for Virginia) describes her drive to create fine art. “It’s a calling,” she says of her life’s work, which has taken several twists and turns but has, nevertheless, led her down the path toward fulfillment. A lifelong Texan, Vaughan grew up in the Austin area and today makes her home in Round Rock, a suburb of the capital city. As a child, she exhibited a love of making art and played the role of the creative one among the seven children in her family, eventually working for several of her siblings as a sign painter and designer. Her parents forever encouraged her to appreciate and mine her passion, instilling in her that it was not simply a passing fancy, but an innate gift. “It was always conveyed to me that this was a God-given talent,” she says. Somehow that made me feel like it was something I was supposed to do. It gave me permission to pursue it. Vaughan attended college on an athletic scholarship, though she filled her schedule with art classes and subsequently secured an internship at an advertising agency. That introduction to the corporate world set her off in a new direction—she left school to parlay the summer job into a full-time position. She continued to work as a commercial artist for many years after that, winning several prestigious ADDY Awards and working on high-profile accounts for Samsung, the Lady Bird Johnson...
