About the Item
A finely detailed oil landscape of the Delaware Gap attributed to French American artist Regis Francois Gignoux (1816-1882). Gignoux was born in Lyon, France, and began his studies in Fribourg, Switzerland and then at the St. Pierre Academie in Lyon, France, which was celebrated for teaching floral still-life painting. He then studied at the Beaux-Arts Académie with historical painter Hippolyle Paul Delaroche and with Emile Jean Horace Vernet. Delaroche turned his painting interest toward landscapes, taking him on summer sketching tours in Switzerland. He then ventured to America with his brother, pursuing a love interest, settling in Brooklyn with his new wife. His first paintings were winter landscapes, and by 1844, Gignoux had opened a studio in New York City becoming one the first to join the illustrious group (Bierstadt, Church, Cropsey, Kensett, Whittridge, etc.) at the famous Tenth Street Studio. His most celebrated painting Niagara Falls in Winter, 1848 (U.S. Capitol, Senate wing, third floor, south corridor) exemplified American landscape painting. Gignoux exhibited regularly at the National Academy of Design and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. In 1851, Gignoux was elected a member of the National Academy of Design, and he was the first president of the Brooklyn Art Academy.

- Autumn LandscapeBy William Louis Sonntag Sr. 1Located in Milford, NHA wonderful Autumn landscape likely of the Hudson River Valley by the revered American artist William Louis Sonntag (1822-1900). Sonntag was born near Pittsburgh, PA and moved to Cincinnati, OH in the 1840’s to study art. He studied for a brief time with G. Frankenstein at the Cincinnati Academy of Fine Art and his idealized paintings of American wilderness and visionary paintings of imagined European ruins were commercially successful. - Vista From West Campton, New HampshireBy Frederick WilliamsLocated in Milford, NHA fine New Hampshire landscape by American artist Frederick Dickinson Williams (1829–1915). Frederick Dickinson Williams was born into a patrician household in Boston, Massachusetts and attended the prestigious Boston Latin School before entering Harvard University in 1846. After graduation and until 1874, Williams taught drawing and painting in the Boston Public School System as a Professor of Drawing until 1874. Williams and his wife, the former Lucia M. Hunt, of Newburyport, relocated to Paris, France, where both studied the new French art and painted landscapes and genre scenes in their studio until 1888, when Lucia died in Paris. Williams returned to the United States and settled in Boston, opening a studio in late 1888. He continued to paint in the Boston area with regular trips to the White Mountains of New Hampshire and other wilderness areas where he produced a large body of French-inspired landscapes in the manner of Corot and other contemporary French painters. In 1904, a serious fire in his Boston studio destroyed all of his inventory, including a number of award-winning canvases from his Paris sojourn. Despite this significant loss, he continued to paint. During his long and successful career, Williams exhibited his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Washington DC Art...Category
