About the Item
Narcisse Diaz de la Peña (1807–1876) was a French painter associated with the Barbizon
School, a group of artists who focused on naturalistic landscape painting. He was born on
August 20, 1807, in Bordeaux, France. Diaz began his artistic career as a porcelain decorator,
but he later shifted his focus to painting.
Diaz moved to Paris in the 1830s and became a prominent figure in the art scene of the time. He
gained recognition for his depictions of forest scenes and woodland landscapes, which were
characterized by their rich colors and atmospheric effects.
Narcisse Diaz de la Peña's painting style is characterized by his distinctive approach to
landscape painting. He was known for his lush, vibrant depictions of forest scenes. His works
often featured dense foliage, dappled sunlight filtering through trees, and the play of light and
shadow on the forest floor.
Diaz's use of color was particularly notable. He employed a rich and vivid palette, utilizing bold
and intense hues to convey the natural beauty and vitality of the landscapes he painted. This
contributed to the emotive and sensory quality of his works.
Additionally, Diaz had a penchant for capturing the transient effects of light in his paintings. He
adeptly portrayed the shifting moods and atmospheric conditions within his woodland scenes,
creating a sense of immediacy and connection with nature.
While Diaz's primary focus was on landscapes, he occasionally incorporated figures into his
compositions, adding a human element to the natural settings he depicted.
Narcisse Diaz de la Peña's contributions to the Barbizon School played a significant role in the
development of 19th-century landscape painting. His works can be found in major museums and
collections around the world, and he is recognized for his skill in capturing the essence of the
natural world with a vivid and emotional intensity.

Narcisse Virgilio Díaz de la Peña
Narcisse Diaz de la Peña, French landscape and figure painter and founding member of the Barbizon School, was born in 1808 in Bordeaux to Spanish parents who had fled the Peninsular Wars. At 15 he began working as a ceramic painter in a porcelain factory, where he met Jules Dupré. Strongly influenced by Delacroix and the Romantics and attracted by medieval and Middle Eastern art, Diaz often in his early career painted exotic subjects. He showed his paintings in the Paris Salons of the 1830s and 1840s. Beginning in 1833 Diaz began to explore the forest of Fontainebleau, where he became a regular summer visitor in the following years, forming a close association with Théodore Rousseau and the other landscape painters of what came to be known as the School of Barbizon. Awarded a first-class medal at the Salon of 1848, he was appointed chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1851. In the early 1860s Diaz was welcoming to the Impressionists, especially Renoir, whom he met painting at Barbizon. At Etretat, where he summered in 1869, he painted seascapes in the company of Gustave Courbet. Diaz's work is in numerous collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Louvre and the National Gallery in London.
