Edge of Pier St Ives Cornwall with sea and boats in hazy summer light - Oil

early 20th century

About the Item

Edge of the Pier at St Ives, Cornwall with boats in the sea and hazy late summers day sunshine. MARY McCROSSAN RBA NEAC BRITISH 1865 - 1934 Mary McCrossan was born in Liverpool and studied at the Liverpool School of Art and then in Paris at the Academie Delecluse. She is best known as part of the St. Ives school and her earliest known St Ives title was shown in 1898. Adopting the town as her own, and using it as her base, she ran a painting school from her Porthmeor studio and exhibited harbour and coastal pictures from St Ives up to her death. She came to St. Ives originally to study with Julius Olssen, along with John Anthony Park. Painting chiefly in oils, she also produced many impressionist studies in watercolour of cloud effects over Porthmeor Beach; she specialised in painting the sea. Mary McCrossan held several one man shows at the Baillie and Beaux Arts galleries between 1909 and 1928. McCrossan lived in Cheyne Walk and travelled extensively until 1929 when she moved to St.Ives permanently. Following her travels on the Continent, she exhibited dazzling oils from Provence and the Mediterranean at the New English Art Club and the Royal Society of British Artists. She also exhibited at the Paris Salon. Mary McCrossan died on 3rd November 1934. Her work is represented in the Walker Art Gallery, Southport Art Gallery and Contemporary Art Society. Several paintings by McCrossan are illustrated in the British Impressionism book.
