About the Item

This dramatic Scottish Impressionist 19th century oil painting is by noted Scottish artist Joseph Henderson. Painted in 1876 it was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy the same year entitled Storm Coming On. The composition is a seascape with a few vessels under a stormy looking grey sky. Light is breaking through the clouds and the grey sea has areas bathed in beautiful silvery light as well as a few gulls wheeling in the wind. There is wonderful impasto and brushwork in the stormy clouds and waves. This is a lovely example of Joseph Henderson's work and of 19th century Scottish Impressionist art. Signed lower right and dated 1876. Provenance: Countess of Lytton descendants. Exhibited: Royal Scottish Academy 1876 No. 384 entitled Storm Coming on. James Bourlet Frame Condition. Oil on canvas, image size 30 inches by 18 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a beautiful Bourlet frame, 36 inches by 24 inches and in good condition. Joseph Henderson RSW (1832-1908) was a Scottish painter of landscapes, genre, portraits and marine-scape. His genre was particularly painting working men such as shepherds, crofters, peddlers, cobblers, fishermen and farm labourers. However he also painted Scottish country and coastal scenery. Henderson studied at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh and started to work as a portrait painter but having done so for about twenty years he discovered his true vocation which was marine painting. He mastered the painting of the sea in all its different conditions and light. Henderson exhibited his work at the Royal Scottish Academy and at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy in London from 1871 to 1886 and in Suffolk Street Galleries from 1882 to 1884. He was the President of the Glasgow Art Club, in which city he settled in 1852. Henderson married three times: in 1855, Helen Cosh; in 1869, Helen Young of Strathaven (died 1871); and in 1872, Eliza Thomson. Two of his sons John Henderson (1860-1924) and J. Morris Henderson also known as Joseph Morris Henderson RSA (1863-1936) also became painters in their own right. His daughter Marjory Henderson married the well known Scottish painter William McTaggart, who painted in 1894 a wonderful portrait of Joseph Henderson which was presented by the family of Joseph Henderson in 1925 to the Glasgow Museums.

  • Tiree Coastal Landscape Scotland - Scottish Impressionist Edwardian oil painting
    By Joseph Morris Henderson
    Located in London, GB
This serene Scottish Impressionist Edwardian coastal landscape is by noted Scottish artist Joseph Morris Henderson. It was painted circa 1910 and entitled Tiree verso. Tiree is the most westerly island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland and one of the sunniest places in Scotland as well as midge fee due to the stiff breeze. Tiree is a very popular windsurfing venue and sometimes referred to as the Hawaii of the north. In most years, the Tiree World Classic surfing event is held here. The exact location of the painting is probably Vaul beach. Henderson has painted the view from one side of the large sweeping bay, so one looks across the beach to the opposite headland. His palette of light turquoise blues of the sea is just beautiful with the dramatic blusterly clouds above the sunny beach. The brushwork and impasto as just superb. This is a wonderful sunny Scottish coastal landscape and a superb example of Henderson's work. Signed lower right. Provenance. Signed and titled on T. & R. Annan & Sons, Ltd., Glasgow verso. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 24 inches by 18 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a frame that compliments the picture, 31 inches by 25 inches and also in excellent condition. Joseph Morris Henderson (1863-1936). Born in Glasgow, son of the artist Joseph Henderson by whom he was strongly influenced. Studied at Glasgow University and Glasgow School of Art. His style absorbed much from romantic Victorian realism and he dedicated himself to landscapes, seascapes and coastal scenes. He exhibited throughout his life primarily in Scotland. He was elected an Associate member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1928 and a full member in 1935. He exhibited there from 1890 for nearly fifty years, exhibited approximately 80 paintings.

  • After Sunset by the Lake, 1889 by Swedish Artist Anton Genberg, 1889
    Located in Stockholm, SE
Among the treasured classic arts we offer for sale is this stunning painting by the artist Anton Genberg. Born in 1862 to Pehr Jonsson and Anna Genberg, he left an indelible mark on the art world through his magnificent creations. Genberg's life was colored with a passion for exploration, study, and artistic expression. His artistic journey began with studies at the Tekniska skolan in Stockholm from 1882 to 1884, during which he also honed his skills at Oscar Törnås' private painting school. He furthered his education under the tutelage of Per Daniel Holm at the prestigious Konstakademien from 1884 to 1889. During these years, Genberg's exceptional talent was recognized with numerous scholarships and medals. Our painting, dated 1889, transports us to a captivating scene just some minutes after sunset. The canvas is imbued with a beautiful golden glow as the sun's last rays kiss the sky. Amidst a serene lake, the heavenly light reflects, painting the water's surface with mesmerizing shades of purple. In the distance, the landscape is dominated by a mountainous forest, while in the foreground, a stretch of land adorned with bushes creates a sense of depth. The impressionist style comes alive through Genberg's swift brushstrokes, reminiscent of the masterful techniques employed by Rembrandt, with branches delicately etched using the opposite end of the brush. Genberg's fame as a landscape artist was solidified through his enchanting depictions of snow-laden landscapes from Norrland, particularly the majestic "fjällen" (mountains). His art also captured the allure of Stockholm, Dalarna, and his birthplace in Jämtland. Notably, his masterpiece "Vinterafton" earned him a place of honor at the esteemed Nationalmuseum. Beyond his creative pursuits, Anton Genberg was actively involved in the art community. He served as the vice-chairman of the Svenska konstnärernas förening from 1913 to 1918 and held a position on the board of Sveriges allmänna konstförening from 1906 to 1939. His exceptional contributions were recognized when he was elected as a member of the Konstakademien in 1922. Throughout his life, Genberg resided in various places, leaving behind a trail of artistic inspiration. From 1916 to 1924, he lived in the enchanting Villa Wallbeck-Hansen, a masterpiece of national romanticism...
