circa 1930

About the Item

The painting signed Ernest Albert is 10.5 x 15.5 unframed and could benefit from a cleaning and better frame unless you like this look. This painting has the tell tale signs of Alberts tiny patch work like brush strokes he developed and utilized in many of his works although later works have a heavier application of paint. Possibly an early painting attributed to Ernest Albert done on masonite panel, which was developed around 1924. Masonite was one of the most prevalently used of the new materials. This manufactured hardboard, which lies beneath the paint of innumerable 20th century artworks, was invented in Laurel, Mississippi, in 1924 by William H. Mason. Info found on the internet. Ernest Albert (1857-1946) Ernest Albert worked as a newspaper illustrator while studying at the Brooklyn Institute School of Design, but upon graduation switched gears and began an apprenticeship in scene-painting at the Park and Union Square theaters in New York. Vose Gallery Albert spent summers in Old Lyme after 1896 and became integrated in the budding artist colony. He concentrated primarily on easel painting after 1909. His paintings are noted for the Impressionistic brushwork and subtle gradations of light, and he participated regularly in exhibitions at the National Academy of Design. He was the founder and first president of the Allied Artists of America, and a member of the American Watercolor Society, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, and the Lyme Art Association.
