Charles-Louis Verboeckhoven
Ships in open water - Charles-Louis Verboeckhoven (Waasten 1802-1889)

About the Item

Oil on canvas Signed lower left: “Louis Verboeckhoven” Dimensions: 53 x 70 cm, 79 x 97 cm (framed) “Ships in open water,” is an artwork by Charles-Louis Verboeckhoven presenting an atmospheric portrayal of maritime life. The painting captures a compelling blend of tranquility and turmoil as it showcases ships navigating through open waters under a brooding sky. The effect contrasts with the somewhat active water, which appears to be in motion but not tumultuous. The open sea is rendered with impressive attention to detail, as the artist skillfully conveys the subtle ebb and flow of the waves. Charles-Louis Verboeckhoven was a Belgian marine painter in the Romantic style. His first names are often given as Louis-Charles. His father, Barthélemy Verboeckhoven was a sculptor and his older brother, Eugène, was an animal painter, both of whom provided his first artistic training. In 1815, the family moved to Ghent, where he developed an interest in marine painting and came under the influence of Frans Balthasar Solvyns.
