Polly Shindler
Gin Game in Yellow Room, Dining, Wooden Table, Chairs, Card Game, Green Plants

2023

About the Item

A round wooden table surrounded by chairs stands in the center of a yellow dining room. A deck of cards is spread out on the table, arranged and ready for a game of gin rummy. Two lush, green, leafy plants hang from the ceiling on either side of the room, while a window between the plants shows the darkness of the night outside, a stark contrast to the cheerful, bright yellow room. In her work, Polly Shindler is always thinking about the psychology of a place. Ideas born from an investigation of solitude and retreat over time became an investigation into the lives and homes of others. Curiosity about the arrangement of a place itself raises questions: how are households organized, who designed the space, how are personal effects displayed, what is on the coffee table, and what is hidden away? Shindler appreciates the specificity of the choices. The presentation of a home expresses how its inhabitants interact with and see the world. Shindler’s paintings are of places, not people. By not depicting the figure in her work she conveys a deliberate neutrality creating simultaneously a void and a fullness, paintings full of the suggestion with no one in them. Polly Shindler’s work has been shown widely in the United States and in London and Madrid. She has been awarded residencies at Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, NY, Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT, Wassaic Project, Wassaic, NY, and others. Her work has been featured in Juxtapoz Magazine, Forbes, Art New England, and New York Arts Magazine to name a few. Shindler earned her MFA at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, and a BA in History at University of Massachusetts.

  • Studio 2006, Pointillist Interior Painting, Artist Studio
    Located in Kent, CT
In this pointillist interior scene, an artist's studio is carefully painted in colorful dots in acrylic and gouache on Duralar mounted on panel. Signed and dated on verso. Kirstin Lamb’s gridded, meticulously detailed paintings on transparent acetate are labor-intensive paintings of labor-intensive textiles and patterns. To create these embroidery paintings, Lamb starts by generating a digitized grid and painstakingly painting each individual gridded stitch by hand using acrylic and gouache on a wet media acetate. The process creates a one-to-one relationship of mark to stitch, the act of each brushstroke serving for the stitch of a needle. Lamb’s embroidery paintings draw patterns from French floral wallpaper of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, while others draw inspiration from vintage embroidery patterns...

  • Incredible Edible Flower Cake, Bright Still Life Food Art, Contemporary Pop Art
    Located in Deddington, GB
A joyful depiction of a towering celebration cake decorated in edible wild flowers. This painting has a great deal of texture, vibrancy and character. Kerry Louise Bennett, artist and painter, has original artworks available with Wychwood Art in our gallery and online. Working from her home studio in Sheffield, Kerry Louise Bennett (b.1972) makes colourful paintings loaded with texture and pattern. Her previous lives working in set design, upholstery and photography, and her passion for music and literature, all feed into the semi-abstract interior and still life compositions she paints. In one sense the objects painted and the relationships between them can be seen as arbitrary, necessary only to serve a sense of spatial orchestration, and the abstract sensibility of a process-led artist, however, an element of romance and storytelling always seems to emerge in her charming characterful paintings. Colour and composition, strong mark-making and the pure materiality of paint drive my creative practice, but of course everything I make reveals something of me - the introvert, the observer, the dreamer. I work over multiple layers before finding the story the painting wants to tell. In some ways I feel like the conductor of an unruly orchestra - there is a musicality to my work, and my visual vocabulary draws on the everyday to capture a kind of unconscious narrative that transforms chaos into calm, worry into joy, the mundane to the magical. Kerry says of herself: I am obsessed with colour first and foremost – it’s impact is so visceral, but mark making is also important – usually expressed through pattern and the shapes of things often scratched into the surface of the paint, with textures then built up over many layers. My visual vocabulary draws on the ordinary stuff of life - chairs, plants...
