About the Item

The Great Flood Flemish painter active in the 17th century Oil painting on canvas 52 x 70 cm. - In frame 76 x 95 cm This interesting seventeenth-century Flemish painting illustrates the biblical event of the Great Flood, hurled on the earth by God to punish the inhabitants of their wickedness and degeneration. Thanks to this huge flood the world would have been purified of sinners, with the only exception reserved for Noah's Ark which, as a symbol of the Church itself, became a means of salvation for Noah and his family, as well as a couple of all kinds. animal. The primordial catastrophe of the flood is detailed in the biblical book of Genesis (Bible, Genesis 6-8), and the details are impressive, dramatic and very strong: the rain fell on the earth for forty days and forty nights, the waters rose and lifted. the ark that rose on the earth, and they were more and more overwhelming until they covered the whole earth and obliterated every living thing that lived there. The scene immortalized by our painter identifies us in the midst of the tragedy in progress, with details described in an extremely realistic way that, based on the model of similar works made by many Flemish masters, focuses above all on the desperate struggle of men and animals for survival. The Ark is depicted in the distance, almost shrouded in darkness, signifying the distance from the men in the foreground who are now desperate for their imminent fate. The striking contrast between the illuminated foreground and the dark landscape in the background highlights the drama of the scene. We see a tangle of bodies emerging from the foamy water, while clinging with the strength of desperation to any hold that may have the appearance of salvation. Each image strikes and captures the viewer's attention. Particularly touching are the scenes depicting mothers with their babies, which show us how not even the innocence of children is spared from the ferocious tragedy hurled on men by divine anger. To make this work unique, compared to others also famous with the same subject, is the inclusion in the composition of a 'Madonna with Child' which, although in anachronistic contrast with the event of the Flood, joins the subject in question for the fate of Christ, sacrificed by the Father for the salvation of humanity from sin. The sky is an active part of the earthly disaster, perfectly reflecting the passage of the biblical text, with the black clouds swollen with rain that progressively close the sunlight and obscure the hope of the living. There is something apocalyptic in this vision, which the author was able to grasp perfectly. The analysis of the painting and the stylistic details that compose it allow us to attribute its authorship to a Flemish author, although on closer inspection, especially in the rendering of the figures, it is possible to detect its influence from the Italian figurative culture, with a mannerist imprint. The work is in good condition and is complete with a beautiful gilded wooden frame. Giovan Battista Lama (Naples, 1673 - 1748) workshop Exaltation of the Holy Cross with the Symbols of the Passion oil on canvas 84 x 135 cm. - with frame 98 x 148 cm. The proposed painting is the work of a Neapolitan painter active at the beginning of the 18th century, although the composition betrays the influence of the Roman classicism prevailing at the end of the 17th century, discernible in the serene and casual atmosphere. This is a very interesting subject, namely the Exaltation of the Cross, a particular feast in Christian theology, commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus with the particular aim of emphasising the centrality of the mystery of the cross. We see precisely Jesus, bowed in prayer in the company of an angel, while a host of angels above hold the most relevant symbols of his Passion (in Latin, arma Christi), namely the objects that were used for the crucifixion. These include, of course, the cross held by the major angel, and then the nails (three or four), the crown of thorns the lance with which Jesus was pierced, Veronica's veil (the linen cloth that St Veronica...

  • Moses and the Pillar of Cloud by Lucas Cranach the Elder and Studio
    By Lucas Cranach the Elder
    Located in New Orleans, LA
Lucas Cranach the Elder and Studio 1472-1553 German Moses and the Pillar of Cloud Oil on panel Moses and the Pillar of Cloud is a bold and evocative composition that showcases the signature intense color and intricate detail of Lucas Cranach the Elder’s celebrated oeuvre. The remarkable 16th-century oil on panel by Lucas Cranach and his studio captures the narrative moment when Moses leads the Israelites out of Egypt and encounters God manifested through a large pillar of cloud. Moses stands at the precipice of a bridge and turns back to soldiers helping to lead the group of Israelites who huddle closely together. Cranach depicts Moses with his traditional iconography, rendering the rays of light on his head which came to be interpreted as "horns" in the translation of the Bible. Using his traditional walking staff, Moses gestures toward the pillar, seemingly acknowledging that God will protect the group as they cross the bridge to the other side, leaving exile and entering a promised land. In a nod to Cranach’s Germanic locale, he renders the figures and setting in a manner that feels decisively more akin to European aesthetics than those of the Red Sea. Soldiers wear elaborate, gothic suits of armor that recall the livery of Northern European guardsmen. The terrain appears more like a European forest giving way to a sweeping valley than the arid landscape the Israelites trekked through on their journey across the Red Sea. Though still clearly recounting a story from the Old Testament, Cranach renders the cast of characters and setting in an earthly, familiar manner. This aesthetic shift speaks to Cranach’s own changing beliefs as he found himself at the center of the Protestant Reformation. After first gaining recognition in 1505 as the official painter of Frederick the Wise, Cranach established a thriving painting and print studio in Wittenberg, Germany. Cranach was renowned for his court portraits and genre paintings and was also well known for his association with the famous protestant reformer Martin Luther, then under the protection of Frederick the Wise. As Wittenberg became a bastion of new religious thought, Cranach soon befriended Luther and played an active role in creating the printed materials that proliferated throughout the Reformation...
