Follower of Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi)
The Tooth-Puller (Il Cavadenti) - Oil on Canvas by Follower of Caravaggio

Late 17th Century

About the Item

The Tooth-Puller is a superb original oil painting on canvas, realized by an anonymous artist, a follower of Caravaggio, in the first half of the XVII century. Our specimen is a reproduction of Caravaggio's original oil on canvas Il cavadenti, today preserved at the Palatine Gallery at the Pitti Palace, in Florence. Our work is not the only known copy from the original Caravaggio: in 2000, Christie's examined another one. The cavadenti is a precious specimen for the low number of known copies and because it is now the subject of controversies and investigations by scholars. Studying the original Caravaggio one can formulate two hypotheses. This copy may have been made around 1620, when Caravaggio's painting would have transited from Malta to Florence, or around 1649, when the Duke of Mantova Francesco I d'Este requested a copy. It is still difficult to identify the author of our replica, among the Sicilian painters emulators of the Lombard master (Alonso Rodriguez, Mario Minniti, Carlo Selllito, Pietro D'Asaro) and among the copyists active in Florence such as Alessandro Frigoni known as Bazzicaluva. In excellent conditions, including a golden painted wooden frame. A really unusual painting to show in your private collection realized with a superb technique, a piece of art history to keep jealously! Reference bibliography: G. "THE FIGHT" Painting 60" x 40" inch by Isaac Pelayo Medium: oil and aerosol on canvas ABOUT THE ARTIST: Isaac Pelayo is a head on crash collision between The Renaissance and Street Art. In a household where constant turmoil and violence were more apparent than most a young Pelayo met escape and peace within the confines of himself and his own creativity. Hispanic born in the heavy beating heart of Los Angeles on the seventh day of June 1996. Pelayo was caught in the crossfires of everything that surrounded him but art served as his only guidance. After dropping out of college Pelayo turned from his hyperrealistic pencil portraits to oil painting where his passions grew more immensely. As of today Pelayo’s work is most influenced and fueled by the crème de la crème of old master painters like Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Velazquez as well as graffiti artists such as RETNA, Shepard Fairey, and EL MAC. In 2017 his work caught the attention and landed in the firm grasp of renown rapper and collector Alvin “Westside Gunn” Worthy. He has created several album covers and artworks for the Buffalo rap moguls music label Griselda Records including his personal collection. Pelayo’s paintings are widely recognized and sought out from all over the globe. His collectors include Sean “Diddy” Combs, Westside Gunn, Benny The Butcher, Jeff Hamilton, Shepard Fairey, Jaysse Lopez, and Everlast of House of Pain...

Oil on canvas, 62 x 51 cm (without the frame) Even if on the background there is an attribution to “Francesco Gessi pupil of Guido Reni” by the bolognese art historian Guido Zucchini (dated 1945), recent studies are tending to add it to the corpus of Girolamo Negri called Il Boccia (Bologna 1648-1718) due to lots of similarities with his style (the pale and warm palette chosen, the profile) The painting represents a lady on profile wearing a brown turban, a yellow clock...
