David Sanders
"Night Crossing" Cowboy Pastel Painting Green Twilight Creek Horses Western

About the Item

A dramatic scene of cowboys on horseback set in the Wild West. Twilight has fallen on a gang of four cowboys as they ride their horses across a river. Their riffles are ready as if anticipating an enemy. The piece measures 23 x 34.5. It is beautifully framed and ready to hang in an ornate, gilt wood frame with reflection proof glass. The overall measurements is 33 x 45 inches. About the Artist: David Sanders was born in San Antonio in 1936 and began studying art at the age of ten in the Witte Museum. He attended Texas State University in San Marcos, majoring in commercial art before turning his full attention to the art of the Old West. In 1966 he moved from San Antonio to Austin, where he still lives with his wife Sally and their three children. He is one of the twelve founders of the Texas Association of Professional Artists, and in 1975, had a one-man exhibition of his paintings at the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, Texas. All of Sanders’ paintings are done not only with exceptional talent but with a great care that brings out in exact detail and excellent composition the story he wants to tell, making each work of art a masterpiece of artistic accomplishment. Working mostly in pastels, like the early Texas artist Frank Reaugh, Sanders brings to this medium the depth and rich coloring of an oil painting and has been described by one critic as "the best pastel artist I have ever seen." In 1969 Sanders illustrated the book, "Rangers of Texas" for the Texian Press in Waco, which work consisted of seven paintings in full color. His paintings have appeared in Cattlemen’s Magazine and have been used on the covers of four of the King Ranch Sales Catalogues. Sanders’ works are in many noted collections of Western art, including those at the King Ranch, National Polled Hereford Association, and the Diamond M Museum. His paintings hang in the homes of many prominent Americans, including Governor Dolph Briscoe, Darrell Royal, and James Brolino of the Marcus Welby TV show.

-ARTIST STATEMENT- I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an Everyman who is at odds with society and his self. Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid. This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light. -BIO- Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. Christopher's artistic influences are many; from a seminal exposure to Dore's engravings of the Divine Comedy, to Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya, and up to Lucian Freud, Mark Tansey...

Nahum Tschacbasov Biography : Russian-American artist Nahum Tschacbasov (1899-1984) is known for his cubo-surrealistic works which feature a strong psychological element. Some of his work bears a resemblance to work of another Russian-American artist--David Burliuk. He then returned to the US where he joined Rothko and Gottlieb at the Galery Seccession. He was one of the co-founders of The Ten, a group of social conscious abstract painters which included Rothko, Gottlieb, Joseph Solman and Ilya Bolotowsky, among others. In 1944, he began to work at Stanley Hayter's Atelier 17, a center for surrealistic ideas. Between 1936 and 1943, he had five one-man exhibitions at the ACA Galleries and participated in five group shows. He also exhibited at the Whitney, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Knox Albright Museum, the Chicago Institute of Fine Art and Corcoran, among others. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Met, the Whitney, the Brooklyn Museum and the Jewish Museum.
