About the Item

Amit Ambalal Untitled Mixed Media on paper 37.5cm x 56.5cm Signed and dated 1990 Provenance: Exhibition catalogue to verso for a Solo Show at Jehingir Art Gallery, Mumbai 1990 with forward by Stuart Cary Welch Amit Ambalal’s paintings provide us with a social commentary on everyday India. He calls on Indian art traditions, mixing tribal, animal, a raw line and bold colours. We are drawn to his style as we enjoy the heady mix of the traditional primitive with the modern. As with any piece of art, meaning is always with the viewer. This piece makes me smile. My Western eyes take a while to decide that I choose to see an older woman, on a vivid green chair, holding her glasses in her hand with a dog barking loudly next to her. Her stance is confident and challenging. I make a quick reference to portraits of important people, often painted sitting in a Western-style, high-back armchair. In many portraits the background normally offers reference points to a geographical place or objects a clue to who the sitter is and what they do. But in this portrait, the imagery represents a universal Indian woman, hence the blank background. The painting is not about where she comes from but about her place in society. She may be the matriarch of all she surveys. The irony appears that she may not be physically able to see but her spirit is represented by the dog who definitely still has something to say. She may be old but she is still in charge.

Artwork Details: Horse of Hope, 122x152cm, Collaged woodblock print, acrylic ink on Somerset satin paper, 2023 Artwork Provenance: from the Artist Studio photo credits, Isabel working, black and white shots, James Brown In Isabel's own words: Horse of Hope The world had become a sad grey place, mud, empty plains with bleak, loveless sky as far as the eye could see. It seemed that all was lost of the old world. Until one day a whisper began on the breeze, so quiet that you could hardly hear it. But it grew stronger and stronger until the trembled with the sound. 'The horse of hope is coming, the horse of hope is coming!' The horse of hope had arrived, its dainty hooves tapping along the way. Where there had been nothing but emptiness the horse trod and from its feet sprung new life and hope. The world became a lush carpet under its footsteps. Up sprang greenery, pushing its tendrils to the sky. Blue irises reached out their twisted delicate petals welcoming the new life in. Strong, dark foliage grew and grew, and with this creatures began to return from their hiding places. Out from rocks and stones they came, for there was hope once again and the world buzzed with new life. *Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube. With eight huge hops I vaulted a vast desert of sand dunes, hot sand blew in my eyes, blocked my nostrils and burnt my hooves. With nine large leaps I scaled a stone wall that stretched to the skies, the cold grey lumps seemed to penetrate my heart with their silent indifference. I had come to dance before the Queen who had heard rumours of my beauty. I knelt before her in the great long throne room. 'Your majesty,' I said, 'I will dance for you but you must know that this comes with a price. How great the price will be I cannot tell, it will depend on your deepest heart.' 'Dance,' she commanded, 'I care not for such things. There is no price, I am the Queen.' So I tapped my hooves and jiggled my legs, I tossed my mane and I shook my head. I danced and I danced. My body shimmered and shone, radiant in the light of the chandeliers. As I danced a rumble began, it got louder and louder as the walls of the castle crumbled and fell around me. I carried on dancing until nothing was left and the Queen was nowhere to be seen. I assumed she was crushed under the rocks, but I had given her fair warning...
