Large 19th Century portrait of a bay carriage horse in a loose box, oil on canvas by John Emms. Excellent quality and condition example of the famous animal painters work signed and presented in their original gilt frames.

John Emms
John Emms first exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1866. Known for his equestrian and canine portraits, his most interesting works were the dogs, with a particular fondness for foxhounds and terriers. Using bold, loose brushwork and ample paint, Emms created portraits that were sentimental and that expressed vitality.
