William Meyerowitz
"The Lake in Central Park, 1947" - New York City Landscape, Cityscape

About the Item

William Meyerowitz, originally from Russia, embarked on his journey to the United States in 1908 alongside his father, followed shortly by the rest of their family. Upon his arrival in New York, young Meyerowitz was already deeply engrossed in the twin pursuits that would define his existence for the ensuing seven decades: music and art. Between 1912 and 1916, William Meyerowitz pursued his artistic education at the National Academy of Design, with a primary focus on the craft of etching. During this period, he sustained himself by both lending his voice to the Metropolitan Opera and engaging in architectural drafting. Following the completion of his formal studies, Meyerowitz collaborated with fellow artists George Bellows and Robert Henri to establish the People's Art Guild. This organization was conceived with the noble objective of democratizing art by offering alternative exhibition venues, even within the tenement houses of the East Side. It was through this endeavor that Meyerowitz crossed paths with the artist Theresa Bernstein. Their union was sealed in 1919, and for the subsequent six decades, they toiled side by side, first in the bustling city of New York and later in serene locales like Folly Cove and Mount Pleasant Avenue in East Gloucester, on Cape Ann.

  • "Windjammer, Boothbay Harbor" - Boothbay, Maine, Abstract Seascape Scene
    By Philip Barter
    Located in Rockport, MA
Philip Barter, born in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, in 1939, stands as a self-taught artist who navigated his craft without the confines of formal or academic art training. His passion for art, particularly drawing, ignited at an early age and was propelled by his intrinsic motivation. By his mid-teens, drawing evolved into a daily ritual for Barter. Over the years, he meticulously refined his artistic skills, and a transformative period in California during the early Sixties solidified his commitment to a career as a painter. By the 1980s, Philip Barter had ascended to become one of Maine's foremost regionalist painters. His body of work, numbering close to two thousand paintings, is scattered across the United States, Canada, and Europe, adorning both individual and corporate collections. In 1988, Barter's reputation as a distinguished regionalist folk-art painter and interpreter of Maine's Down East experience, predominantly conveyed through his narrative paintings, caught the attention of officials at Massachusetts' DeCordova Museum. Six of his narratives found a place in their traveling exhibition, "Stories to Tell: The Narrative Impulse in Contemporary New England Folk Art." This marked a pivotal moment for Barter, gaining significant exposure in a publication dedicated exclusively to the world of art and artists. In 1992, Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, paid homage to Philip Barter with his inaugural retrospective, recognizing his quarter-century contribution to the realm of Maine art...
