Susan Sharp
"Water's Edge" Abstraction in shades of blue, red, orange, chartreuse, black

2018

About the Item

"Water's Edge" 2018, Acrylic and Gouache on Panels, 48 x 48 x 1 inches (Diptych) Abstraction in shades of bright blues, red, orange, chartreuse, cream and brown. This painting consists of 2 panels which can be installed with a slight amount of space in between or with no space at all. Susan Sharp is an outstanding abstract painter of biomorphic and linear forms, flat planes, vivid color and highly glossy surfaces who works in a wide variety of sizes on wood, mylar and paper. Her oil and acrylic paintings consist of individual panels or several panels which are installed individually abutting each other, allowing for the option of showing them as one piece or 2 paintings shown in very close proximity. An intense colorist, Sharp makes fresh what artists have been challenged by for years: hand and eye coming together to create sensuous, fluid, and radiant paintings, inspired by external and inward experiences. Some aspect of landscape is the primary inspiration for these spirited and gratifyingly fresh abstractions which are paradoxically both spontaneous and methodical, extremely sophisticated in their play of textures on flat surface, and their complex integration of biomorphic and geometric forms. Sharp conveys her love of color and process inspired by nature as she brilliantly and delightfully takes chances by walking a fine line between the accidental and the controlled. Susan Sharp: "My approach to painting is intuitive and a continuing process of self discovery. Working flat, several layers of fluid paint are applied to either paper, mylar or wood panels, imbuing the works with an inner light. Scale shifts and unexpected juxtapositions combined with overlays of the linear and geometric elements, and subtle references to anthropomorphic forms which coexist with these elements, navigate disparate worlds. The density of the woodlands surrounding my Easton (CT) home, the weight and transparency of water as well as topographical drawings and photos done while flying, are all sources of inspiration. Meandering rivers and roads, or blood vessels, translate into flowing linear connectors, land masses to body parts. The ambiguity expressed in my works is what compels me. I am drawn to paint in its liquid state, where forms are in the process of emerging. Pouring several layers of paint on smooth surfaces , such as paper or mdf panels, results in dense and translucent personal topographies. The abstract imagery born is both psychological and intuitive. Scale shifts, pattern and unexpected juxtapositions add to the sense of play and ambiguity." Susan Sharp’s paintings have been seen in numerous solo exhibitions in New York and Connecticut and in many group exhibitions in private galleries and public institutions nationwide including the Silvermine Art Center, the Housatonic Museum of Art, and the Stamford Museum. She is the recipient of awards from the Silvermine Arts Center, the Connecticut Commission on the Arts and the Stamford Museum. Sharp’s paintings are included in distinguished private collections as well as such public collections as the State of Connecticut, General Electric, Chase Manhattan Bank, Kidder Peabody Corporation, the Town of Fairfield, CT, Huntington Bank, Pullman & Comley and the Housatonic Museum of Art.

  • "Studio" Playful Matisse-like Abstraction Blue, Pink, Red, Yellow, Black, White
    By Margo Margolis
    Located in Wellesley, MA
This abstraction by NY based artist Margo Margolis has a very sophisticated/playful sensibility with brilliant, intense color (yellow, red, orange, pink, blue, turquoise, black and white) which is the significant attribute of the artist's flashe medium, a water based French paint. Consisting of multiple layers of underpainting and glazing, and contrasts between hard and soft edges, these paintings not only have associations with Henri Matisse's palette and Alexander Calder's sculptural forms, but also share in these artists' complexities after relatively straightforward initial first takes. Fresh and intelligent exploration into the possibilities for abstraction are Margolis's focus, and her paintings achieve that rare quality of making abstraction feel new. Margo Margolis "Studio" 2022 Flashe on Canvas 24 x 20 x 1.25 Inches This painting is unframed and framing is not necessary as the sides are painted white. It is currently on view in an exhibition of the artist's work in Wellesley, MA where it is featured in a group of works of varying sizes, small, medium, and large: 24 x 20 inches, 40 x 32 inches, 72 x 60 inches, and works on paper measuring 30 x 22 inches. Also available are a series of earlier small canvases measuring 14 x 11 inches each which also work well as groupings. Margolis’s continuing commitment to abstract painting dates back to the early 1970s when she began exhibiting with the Brooke Alexander Gallery in New York where she had several shows. In addition her work has been exhibited throughout the country at numerous galleries and institutions including The Pennsylvania Academy of Art, The Renaissance Society, The Munson-Williams Proctor Institute and Halls Walls, among others. In reviewing the artist’s 1993 exhibition in the Beth Urdang...

Swiss born artist Marco Schmidli creates minimalist paintings with a contemporary edge. Placing emphasis on process, he lets the mediums naturally manifest within his artwork. “An important aspect of my artwork is the removal of my own artistic hand. Instead of controlling and demanding the paint move and act a certain way, I let the paint naturally manifest and express its pure form/ true colors/ most natural movement.” Schmidli's work is known for its sensitive surfaces and subtle textures. He has developed specialized techniques for applying and layering color, giving depth to his paintings. This 64 inch high by 90 inch wide original artwork...
