Susan English
Joachims Dream, Apricot Peach, Pale Yellow Ivory, Violet Tinted Polymer Painting

2022

About the Item

Joachim's Dream by Susan English is a wonderful play of color, light, and composition. The layers of English's tinted polymer on aluminum create depth and surface textures throughout the painting, which is composed of three panels. Hues of a dark violet mauve at the bottom panel transition to light ivory on the middle panel toward a light coral shade of peach at the top. Signed, dated and titled on verso. Susan English is inspired by light — the way it refracts on the wind-ruffled surface of the Hudson River, or is absorbed by the shadow of a building, or slices through venetian blinds. By watching light in relation to objects and environments, the artist distills her palette of color for her reductive abstract paintings. In the artist’s words: “Landscapes condense into shapes of color for me: when I look at a mountain across the river I see its blue shadow as a separate solid, a discrete entity. I try to precisely determine what that color is, its density, its timbre in order to evoke this expression of light and mass in my paintings”. English makes her evocative surfaces of nuanced colors by pouring layers of tinted polymer on aluminum panel. The poured polymer mimics nature: a layer of paint hardens like ice or mud; the material’s thickness and viscosity informs the finished appearance. Paint coagulates and gathers in the cracks and fissures of the artist’s drawing under the glossy surface, a result of the delicate and flexible relationship between control and accident. The painted surfaces range from matte to glossy, alternatively absorbing or reflecting light in response to the available illumination and the position of the viewer. Ultimately, the panels are choreographed into horizontal or vertical sequences to create a narrative of color, space, and light. Susan English's work has been the subject of solo exhibitions throughout the United Sates. English received a fellowship at the Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, Ithaca, NY and was artist in residency at Habitat for Artists, Garrison, NY. Her work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Chronogram, Abstract Art Online and the Philadelphia Inquirer, to name a few. English earned an MFA from Hunter College, New York, NY and BA from Hamilton College, Clinton, NY. She lives and works in Cold Spring, NY.

    By Antoinette Ferwerda
    Located in New York, NY
This painting by Antoinette is a stylish and luxurious mixed media on canvas piece depicting abstract geometric shapes with bold use of color and contrast. The artist hand embelleshes gold leaf to add elegant accents. This painting comes housed in a natural oak floater frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 63 x 47 inches Frame measures 64.5 x 48.5inches Antoinette Ferwerda is a renowned Australian artist largely recognized for producing a bold collection of fine artwork that joyfully explores the geometry of shape and the changing light from dusk to dawn. Championing her love for shape, reflection, and nature using a diverse pallet of mixed media to portray her abstract interpretations of nature. Antoinette's diverse past and a childhood that was somewhat nomadic has inspired much of her work today. Antoinette’s backstory reads like something out of an adventure series, having spent her early days living in remote pockets of Papua New Guinea, where she was lucky to spend time in a seaside shack on Ela Beach in Port Moresby, as well as the volcanic town of Rabaul, the Cargo Port Lae, before moving on to Darwin where her Dad worked for the Red Cross and helped with the re-build process after Cyclone Tracy. This was followed by a family stint in Europe, visiting Netherlands, London, Belgium, France, Italy, and Switzerland, before finally settling back in Melbourne for her formative years. Her love for nature and exploring the patterns and relationships she finds within started early. “I’ve been forever fascinated with color and the magical interplay of light”. “Blessed to have a teacher Mum who fostered regular creative time during our nomadic stint, my childhood was largely spent creating, especially outdoors”. Never without a pen, sketchbook or scraps of paper, her natural ability to create in layers instinctively started in these early years. Although her work continues to evolve, she consistently creates works that are rich in layers, resulting in pieces that are optimistic, luminous and full of stories from her colorful life. Her signature work is abundant with color and texture, resulting in a transparent quality of her works. Adaptable to any palette, Antoinette has produced works from a diversity of spectrums and mediums – sun-soaked, muted and ethereal, vibrant, as well as monochromatic with accents of gold. Her themes include abstract and metaphysical interpretations of fossicking in rock pools, exploring the rolling hills of the countryside both here and abroad, the rock formations of the Australian outback and the magical light of a European summer to name just a few. Her dream and longing to become an artist became a reality after starting her own family and farewelling a corporate life in the pharmaceutical industry, with her debut solo exhibition in 2014. Six years on, Antoinette has fast become a firm favorite amongst interior designers, stylists and home decorators alike, having been represented by fenton&fenton, Thom Gallery and Trit House (formally Click On Furniture) to name just a few. Continually experimenting and evolving as an artist, Antoinette invites the viewer to look deeper through surface layers to find hidden stories of color and form. Past collections have been inspired by visits to the bustling markets of India, the morning light outside her childhood beach shack...
