Ruggero Vanni's "From Matter to Energy" is a 70 x 60-inch abstract expressionist oil painting. It is an abstract landscape with the primary colors being red, yellow, and orange. There are explicit references to the masters of the Hudson River School, also known as Luminism, and the Romantic paintings of English artist William Turner. Vanni is also an admirer of Venetian artists Titian, Tintoretto, and Tiepolo, whose theatrical perspectives have significantly influenced his creations. Vigorous brushstrokes swirl on the perimeter of the canvas, creating an almond-like shape, with the center being white, giving the feeling of inner luminosity. Even without figurative elements, the construction has similarities with the very famous Assumption of the Virgin, painted by Late Renaissance artist Titian in 1518.
Vanni states, "My works allude to natural phenomena, in a raw state, devoid of the limiting constrictions of literal representation. Nature is there as a landscape, a view looking up in the air or plunging underwater. Imagery is kept on the edge of recognition, creating the final association in the mind.
Contrasts of matter, color, and light are created to provoke emotional responses. In the large paintings, the atmospheric composition is built by raised brushstrokes shattered and reassembled to reveal an underlying struggle. In the smaller works, paper is cast tumultuously as a counterpoint to its inherent frailness.
References to the history of painting are multiple and mixed: Venetian impasto and glazing, Luminist light, Abstract Expressionist texture, and Baroque perspective.

Ruggero Vanni was born in Paris. He studied painting from 1973 to 1978 at the Istituto d'Arte in Rome, Italy, under the guidance of Italian artist Michelangelo Conte, emphasizing fresco and artwork conceived as a part of the architectural context.
In 1979, he moved to New York to study art at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1982. While at Cooper Union, the classes taught by Erwin Rubin, a former student of Josef Albers, were essential in defining Vanni's interest in colors as the founding elements of his work.
Vanni's artistic prowess has garnered international recognition. He lives and works in the artistic hub of New York City, where he has his studio. He also spends the year working in Italy and Greece, further enriching his artistic perspective. His work has been exhibited in prestigious venues in Italy and the United States and is included in public collections of museums and institutions, a testament to the significance of his artistic achievements.

Ruggero Vanni
Ruggero Vanni was born in Paris. He studied painting from 1973–78 at the Istituto d’Arte in Rome, Italy, under the guidance of Italian artist Michelangelo Conte, with an emphasis on fresco and artwork conceived as a part of the architectural context. In 1979, he moved to New York to study art at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1982.
