About the Item

Minimal in form and bold in colour this is the Black Velvet Series of paintings by Pat Service. A renowned Canadian landscape artist, these abstract images of flora and fauna were inspired by nature’s forms and colours. The colours—green, red, white and blue pop against the velvety black. Striking. "You know those treasures we can still find in second-hand stores, the paintings painted on real velvet? They gave me the idea of starting with a black canvas, which is the opposite of how I have traditionally worked.” Pat Service Service acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of B.C. and later studied art at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. Service’s work is held in private collections in North America, Britain, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong and in several museum collections around the world.

    By Adam Cohen
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
A tangle of colour—dazzling, as if lit from within flows across the canvas in this abstract painting by Adam Cohen. The New York based artist creates work alive with the grand gestural influences of the abstract expressionists’ generation. This piece reprises his signature generous brush strokes and bold palette—blues, greens, pinks, red, orange, yellow, purple, white and black jump from the canvas. “You can look at them and keep seeing new things in them. They’re alive and they have this inexhaustible quality.” Adam Cohen He acquired a BFA at Philadelphia’s Tyler School of Art and lived and painted in Rome for a year. After many successful years as an illustrator, he returned to his first love...

  • Arab Spring - large, dynamic, narrative, surrealist abstract, acrylic on canvas
    By Gregor Hiltner

Inspired by drawings made by children, Hiltner has created a chaotic narrative of surreal figures and animals drawn in red acrylic across an expanse of raw canvas in this over 6 feet wide painting. A central palm tree in red outline with black leaves divides the pyramidal composition that is completed with select sections painted in with red, turquoise, white and periwinkle. The sky is brushed, bright yellow.
