Olivier Julia
Intersection IV 12/25 - blue grey contemporary modern sculpture painting relief

2014

About the Item

Intersection IV 12/25 is one of a series of originally four different small size contemporary modern sculpture painting reliefs by French-Dutch artist Olivier Julia. From this series, Intersection II is no longer available. The work itself is made from wood, fiberboard, a small strip of glass and it is finished with a blue acrylic paint and a mixture of anthracite grey and bronze acrylic paint. It hangs slightly free from the back wall, creating a floating visual experience. Due to the bronze in the acrylic paint, changing ambient light causes changes in the intensity of the grey colour. The glass strip runs diagonally through the work and when looked at from the front it causes a subtle division of the two sides of the relief. Different viewing angles result in different relief patterns. Olivier Julia (1952, France) graduated with a BA in Graphic Art from the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, the city where he now has his studio. Originally his work consists of sober graphic art and monumental drawings, but in more recent years he has explored the dimensional possibilities of graphic art. He creates three-dimensional objects from wood, often painted in subdued colours that are characteristic of his earlier work: differentiated shades of grey and deep blacks. His work is focussed on the subtle interaction of closed versus open, of vertical versus horizontal and of light versus dark. Olivier's work is exhibited throughout Europe and is part of many renowned corporate and public collections. It also features in a number of publications and was selected for the main Dutch abstract-geometric and constructivist art exhibition Symposion 2015.

  • Nocturnal Parts - abstract geometric contemporary modern painting relief
    Located in Doetinchem, NL
Nocturnal Parts is a unique one-of-a-kind contemporary modern painting relief by Dutch artist Sander Martijn Jonker. It is a relief consisting of two open spherical parts with an intriguing matte black finish, perhaps a bit mysterious but very beautifully made. It can be hanged in two different ways, with the opening between the two spherical elements either facing away or facing the observer. Depending where the light comes from one might decide for the one or the other hanging method. Sander Martijn Jonker (1977, Netherlands) graduated from the St. Joost School of Art & Design in Den Bosch, The Netherlands. He primarily makes three-dimensional reliefs that play with the tension between abstraction and representation, surface and space. Light, shadow and their elusive ever-changing properties play an important role. Although the resulting works are abstract, he uses everyday reality as a starting and/or reference point. His work is created through forms of manipulation, distortion, repetition and simplification. Some works arise from the repetition of a simple movement or form, others are made by exploring how far he can go with the deformation and manipulation of the material, after which he captures and preserves the shape. He experiences daily life as uncontrollable and at times confusing. In order to cope with that, he is always looking for patterns and has gradually developed various rituals and ways of control, hoping they can offer him certainty and reassurance. His work and person are inextricably connected. He makes the things he makes because he doesn’t have a choice. He is trying to get a grip...

  • CHEF'S HAT - Intricate Collage Wall Hanging Sculpture w/ Thick Painted Paper
    Located in Signal Mountain, TN
"I welcome the continual emergence of change, evolution, and the inevitable challenges that form a large part of a working artist’s life." With CHEF'S HAT, a recent and evolving work, I am moving into more dimensionality and space. My intention is to push patterned and embellished surfaces on paper from its naturally flat surface into a more structural and spatial plane. This involves making sculptural pieces from paper and experimenting with new construction methods using strips and lengths of paper over-lapped and fastened together, shaped into objects with physical presence. I feel I am migrating from the flat surface into the third dimension. I envision the paper constructions as a landscape to be wandered in and out of, through and around, a space that invites all and sundry to enter on their own terms. I hold firmly to the belief that my work exhibits a playfulness that belies a more serious assessment of our social world. I am interested in how something that is initially perceived as frivolous and celebratory can constitute a reaction against and resistance to the shadowy world of misfortune, hard luck, and weariness. Born in 1959, Lanie Gannon was predominantly inspired by the 1970s. Conceptualism is often perceived as a reaction to Minimalism, and the leading art movement of the 1970s, challenging the boundaries of art with its revolutionary features. The movements that succeeded were all representative of a strong desire to evolve and strengthen the art world, in response to the tensions of the previous 1960s. Process art branched...
