Jeffrey Kurland
"QUANTUM ENTANGLEMENT", Abstract Painting, Acrylic on Canvas, Blue Indigo Green

2019

About the Item

The large abstract painting "QUANTUM ENTANGLEMENT" by Jeffrey Kurland, with acrylic paint on canvas measuring 80" high by 120" wide, is new work from the spring of 2019. Often employing paints and pigments from surprising sources (automotive manufacturers, industrial finishers), the various blue, indigo and green colors appear in an energetic floral structure. Jeffrey has developed his own methods and techniques to achieve this structure. He doesn't use brushes, but pours and directs the paint using a variety of methods. Kurland embraces spontaneity and intuition – there are no preparatory sketches. In this manner he pursues as much as captures the painting. Innovating technically, building structure on the canvas and pushing color abstraction forward on his own terms – bending, breaking, flowing and channeling color. Broad gesture and active, tactile surfaces emerge from the canvas through his experimental process and approach to materials, application and composition. Jeffrey Kurland received his BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Michigan, and an MFA in Painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan. He’s been living and working in New York City since 1976, developing his art practice which includes painting, drawing, collage, monoprints, and book arts.

It's very active, with a woman wearing a colorful cap with feather, her tresses falling down behind/beside her, portrayed with cubist abandon as the artist folds in Picasso with Philip Guston... Note all the formal elements are present – her eyes, her smile, her dress and bosom – yet assemble and disassemble in front of our eyes. From Peter Schenck...

Provenance Steve Chase Design, Palm Springs, CA Ronnie Landfield was born in the Bronx, NY on January 9, 1947 - the same day as his older brother. As a teenager, he was encouraged to pursue a career as an artist, subsequently creating his first real paintings around the age of 14. He was particularly influenced by a Life magazine article from 1961 on the Abstract Expressionists, most notably: Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Hans Hofmann, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. After stints at the Art Students League, the Kansas City Art Institute, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the University of California at Berkeley, Landfield’s professional career as a painter began in New York in 1965. The following year, after completing a major series of hard-edge border paintings, success as a painter began to materialize. The famous architect and collector Philip Johnson and the collector Robert Scull each acquired large paintings works, as did the Sheldon Memorial Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1967, Landfield was invited to participate in the Whitney Annual at the end of the year. His work attracted considerable attention, and he was invited to participate in important group exhibitions at the Bykert, Bianchini, and Park Place Galleries in New York. Landfield joined the David Whitney...
