About the Item
Layers Object No. 12 is a unique ink drawings on Alu-Dibond painting by contemporary artist Doris Marten, dimensions are 55.5 × 121 cm (21.9 × 47.6 in).
The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Between a two-dimensional image and a three-dimensional object, the Layers Series lies. The idea of illusion in the painted lines is being questioned by the artist. Only seven colors are used in the palette, but the way they are placed together gives the impression that there are many more. While some pieces in the series are representations of actual objects, others in the series create the appearance of three dimensions through the juxtaposition of colours with the geometric forms (the layers) made up of lines and colours.
Doris Marten investigates how colours are perceived and how they affect one another through the straightforward use of lines. Lines highlight each colour individually and vividly depict how one colour influences another. The artist has amassed a profound understanding of colour, which enables her to produce optical illusions, motion-based impressions, and intense variations in light.

Doris Marten
Doris Marten’s paintings explore the perception of colours and their mutual influence, immersing the viewer in an abstract geometric world. She uses lines that reveal colours individually and bring to life the effects of their juxtapositions. The artist has developed a thorough knowledge of colours which allows her to create optical illusions, impressions of movement and intense variations of light. From the beginning of the 2000’s, her work has been regularly exhibited in Germany and elsewhere in the world (United States, Europe). Two of her works have been included in the German Bundestag collection. “Time is a material that is necessary to create my paintings. Line by line, they are created in a concentrated process that has much in common with the activity of writing or even telling a story.’’
