Asger Jorn
Untitled (FULL) 154b

1964

About the Item

"Untitled (FULL) 154b" is an oil on canvas work by Asger Jorn. The piece is signed in the lower right, "Jorn 64". The size is 31 3/4 x 25 1/4 inches. The framed size is 36 3/4 x 30 1/4 x 1 1/2 inches. Asger Jorn is known for his pivotal role in developing the movement Situationist International. After joining a communist resistance movement in Paris during World War II, Jorn played an integral part in starting several movements that combined aspects of Marxism with artistic expressionism. These movements include COBRA, the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus, and Second Situationist International. Asger’s artworks usually included frantic, jagged lines, creating abstract figures. Instead, this painting features a mixture of colors on the canvas, melting into one another, almost appearing as if they have soaked into the canvas. This method allows the paint to form organic shapes within the composition, creating an abstract scene and allowing Asger’s use of color to shine. Through his use of browns and blacks within the painting, Asger enables a sense of anxiety to hang around the canvas. Jorn was an active artist across all mediums, including painting, sculpture, ceramic, and collage. He is the permanent collection of 10 major institutions, including Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Centre Pompidou, Tate, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Louisiana Museum of Art, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Museo Reina Sofia, Moderna Museet, and Stockholm. In 1964, he was awarded but turned down, the Guggenheim Award. Provenance: (Possibly) Lefebre Gallery, New York Private Collection, New York, c. 1965 Private Collection, by decent from above Private Collection, Florida Literature: To be included in the forthcoming supplement to the Asger Jorn Catalogue Raisonne under number 154b.
