About the Item
A beautiful small abstract painting with warm earthy yellow colours, and black and white ink accents. The gestural abstraction that captures a sensation, an emotion, a poem in colour.
The Painting is part of the Dreams And Wishes collection and a mini-series of 4 paintings. With a minimalist colour palette and subtle hues, these works are quiet, yet the longer you look at them the deeper they can take you.
Remembering the late summer: the days you can leave the house in flip-flops without piling layers of wool and waterproofs are coming to an end. There is a lot to look forward to and yet I always feel a little sentimental at the end of summer. This mini-series is about the heat, the sand, and the sunshine, the earthy smell of the late summer forest, and the walks on the beach. Like pebbles and shells are the little portals to the places they came from, these little abstracts are your portals into late summer days.

'
I am drawn to abstract art as it communicates by bypassing words and a formalised understanding of the world. Without a subject matter, it is a meditation on canvas, where the process is just as important as the result, a purest creative output that comes entirely from within, the most direct connection between the artist and the universe and between the artwork and the viewers.
I allow the canvas to guide me into discovering the composition through a dialogue of sorts. The initial layers are done in an intuitive state of concentration in which the gestural mark-making is dictated by the subconscious. The final stage is about finding compositional balance through non-action and negative action, standing back to analyse and then moving forward to undo and cover up parts of the painting.
In essence, my point of departure is a debate between choice and chance. My hands choose to control my chosen mediums, acrylic, gesso and ink using small found objects, a process which is juxtaposed by the chance involved in the independent behaviour of materials, a splash of ink or the unpredictability of mixing colour. In building a composition, I find myself in a dream-like state. Guided by my subconscious, my memories and experiences, each painting becomes its own spiritual journey.' - Anna Sudbina
'I look for the poetry of human experience, both personal and shared. Emotions superimposed over the brushstrokes. I have a terrible memory so I don’t paint from memory, I paint from the loss of it. It is the abstraction of the image that allows me to connect with it and relive the precious fleeting moments. If my work does that for anyone else - I am happy.' - Anna Sudbina
This abstract expressionist painting is dual-orientation and can be both vertical and horizontal. It will work well next other paintings from the same series.
Contemporary art directly from the artist's studio. The painting is stretched and unframed. Framing options are available, please get in touch.

In Sudbina’s paintings, pieces of frayed reality are artfully combined with areas of pure gestural abstraction, forming her dynamic visual language. This contrast explores the relationship between actuality and human perception, physical space and a memory of it. Layer by layer, she builds tactile planes interrupted by calligraphic lines of ink. Through a mastery of surface and composition, Sudbina’s paintings imaginatively balance the language of abstraction with references to contemporary life seen through the prism of her artistic vision. Born in Moscow in 1984, Anna came of age in post-Soviet Russia where apart from academic drawing and painting she studied linguistics, philosophy, and psychology. For many years, Sudbina’s worked closely with the world’s leading Architects and Interior Designers. These working environments and experiences greatly informed her outlook, instilling an inclination toward all things high-quality and aesthetic, a familiarity which is visible in her use of colour, texture and compositions, particularly in her Interior of the Mind series. While studying at Central Saint Martins, Sudbina began combining her training in academic drawing and painting, which she had studied under the esteemed Moscow artist Maria Burganova, with the freedom of abstraction. The result is a body of work that documents Sudbina’s increasing confidence in her mark-making and style, moving away from the detail of her earlier figurative compositions toward abstract spaces and places. To achieve this, Sudbina has adapted new and innovative ways of painting, a process which involves pulling and pushing paint using found objects such as plastic clothes tags. The control she gains from using smaller tools over paintbrushes is a closeness between artist and painting which mimics that of process art, building layers not as a painting per se but as a two-dimensional sculpture. Once again, we are reminded of Sudbina’s interest in architecture, space and three-dimensional form. The expansiveness of Sudbina’s expressionistic canvases is contrasted with the intimacy of minute details, subtle changes in tone and intricate painterly brushwork with sharp ink lines painted quickly, directly and with conviction. Technically fluent her complex and beautiful multimedia paintings have an enigmatic quality, titillating the imagination and speaking to the subconscious. In essence, Sudbina’s point of departure is a debate between choice and chance. Her hands choose to control her chosen mediums, acrylic and ink using small found objects, a process which is juxtaposed by the chance involved in gestural mark-making, such as the independent behaviour of materials, a splash of ink or the unpredictability of mixing colour. In building a composition, Sudbina finds herself in a meditative state, guided by her subconscious thoughts, memories and experiences, each painting becoming its own spiritual journey.
