William Henry Barribal was born in Oswestry, Shropshire and first worked as an apprentice lithographer in London before studying at the Academie Julien in Paris. By the turn of the century he was established as an accomplished artist and designer, painting portraits and working as a very active commercial artist. During the 1920s and 1930s he created a range of posters for Schweppes and the London and North Eastern Railway and playing card designs for Waddington’s. He also works for many magazines including Vogue, Illustrated London News, The Strand and The Graphic. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and elsewhere. His wife, Gertrude Louise Fannie Pitt, was his principal model. Barribal lived in London and worked from one of the well-known St Paul’s studios on the Cromwell Road.

William Henry Barribal
William Henry Barribal was a London artist, who began his career as a lithographer before going on to study at the Académie Julian in Paris. By the turn of the 20th century, Barribal had become an accomplished painter and designer. He created a series of images that were used on First World War recruitment posters in Great Britain. During the 1920s and 1930s, he created a range of posters for the Schweppes advertising campaign and in 1921, he was contracted to work for Waddingtons, producing work that was used for posters and later a series of playing cards, these works being keenly sought after today. His bold Art Deco posters designed in the 1920s and 1930s for the London and North Eastern Railway are also well known. His wife, Gertrude Louisa Fannie Pitt was his principal model and his work also included cigarette cards on which she appeared. Barribal also worked for various magazines, including the leading fashion journal Vogue and between 1919–38, he regularly exhibited his work. His images of exquisite and fashionable Edwardian women have become classics and the work of many modern fashion artists shows traces of the unmistakable "Barribal style".

Turrell' for Charles James Turrell (British-American, 1845-1932) and dated 1876. Framed dimensions: 12 x 1 x 10 inches Charles James Turrell was one of the most talented miniaturists of his age. Born in London, he studied under a Mr. Sargeant, perhaps Frederick Sargeant who exhibited at the Royal Academy, before visiting the United States in 1867 where he painted miniatures at the studio of photographer Napoleon Sarony. During this time, Turrell had distinguished sitters including members of the Vanderbilt, Whitney, and Morgan families. While in America, Turrell married and would go on to maintain successful careers in both New York and London where, in 1869, he opened a studio on Bond Street. Turrell exhibited widely and with success including annually at the Royal Academy (1873-1904), the Society of Miniaturists (1873 – 1932), the Brooklyn Art Association (1868), the Pennsylvania Academy of Art (1901) and at the Paris Salons. His sitters included Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, and Queen Alexandra, when she was Princess of Wales (1884). In 1890, he was appointed official miniature painter to Queen Victoria. Turrell's work is held in the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace as well as in the permanent collections of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, London's Victoria & Albert Museum and the Mount Vernon Collection in Washington D.C., among others.
