Victor François Eloi Biennourry
Study of Christ, hands crossed, three pencils on blue paper

About the Item

Victor François Éloi BIENNOURRY (1823-1893) Study of Christ, hands crossed Three pencils on blue paper Signed "V. Biennourry" and located in "Paris" at the top right 10 x 8,5 inch Frame including François Victor Éloi Biennourry, known as Victor Biennourry, was born in 1823 in Bar-sur-Aube. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Michel Martin Drölling in 1839, where he trained for four years. In 1842, he won the Premier Prix de Rome with his interpretation of Samuel sacrant David. He made his first submission to the Salon the same year before staying at the Académie de France in Rome until 1847. On his return from Italy, Victor Biennourry was one of the favourite painters of the imperial court. He distinguished himself as a painter of large historical and religious compositions. From the 1850s onwards, he worked on several decorative projects in Parisian churches (Saint-Eustache, Saint-Séverin, Saint-Etienne-du-Mont and Saint-Roch). He also received various public commissions and was notably entrusted with the creation of large-scale decorations for the Tuileries Palace (the Emperor's study and the Empress's flats) and the Louvre Palace. Victor Biennourry was also asked to paint official portraits, for which he became very famous. Victor Biennourry's preparatory drawings are mostly done in black stone with white chalk highlights on coloured paper. This testifies to his attraction to the graphic culture inherited from the 17th century. His studies of expressive figures with very ample gestures are also in the tradition of the Grand Siècle as bequeathed by Simon Vouet or Charles Le Brun. The three-pencil study on blue paper presented here bears witness to the virtuosity of the hand of this artist of the so-called "academic" century. His study sheets often contain more or less precise annotations. Located in "Paris", this figure study seems to represent Christ with his hands crossed over his torso.
